Ousted in Opener

“We did not give up, our defense fought hard but we were not able to win as a team. We’ll get our swagger back and beat Richardson!”
– kicker Bernie Gonzalez ’19.

Varsity football lost its first district game against Coppell 41-63.

“I thought we didn’t play well in the first quarter then our kids settled in and started to play our game,” began head coach Brandon Hickman. “I give Coppell a lot of credit they have a very good team and a lot of weapons and size.”

The Rangers kicked off with an unsuccessful onside attempt. Hickman agreed that the team “had trouble stopping their offense.”

On the bright side though, “even with our mistakes our players came out and competed hard and were able to cut the lead to 49-34 in the second half.  I thought that showed tremendous fight and character in our football team. I was more impressed with that than anything else.  A lot of teams would have thrown in the towel down 42-7 but not this team.  They kept battling and we cut the lead to two possessions in the 4th.”

Colin Lark defensive player of the week stated: “I think we dug ourselves into a hole in the first half[,] but it showed what kind of a team we are when we were able to fight back. We can’t be letting anyone score 63 no matter what team we play. We’ve got to play better for all 4 quarters.”

“The last four weeks we have learned a lot about our team playing against great competition and competed well,” continued Hickman. “If you have that ‘never quit’ mindset you have a chance to win games.  We have nothing to hang our heads about and all of our goals are right in front of us these next six weeks.  We will bounce back even stronger from last week and be ready to go the remainder of district play.  We have a great football team and I believe in our kids and our leaders on this team.”
