It’s the beginning of a new school year, and while all of us are meeting our new teachers, getting adjusted to our classes, and preparing for the year to come, it’s important to remember where to go and who to ask for help when we need it. The testing center and the math lab are two great examples of the many helpful resources offered to Jesuit students. Most of us are familiar with the testing center and the math lab, but for those of us who aren’t, the testing center is the place where students go to make up tests/quizzes, while the math lab is the place where students go to seek extra math help, whether it be studying for an upcoming test or getting extra instruction on a confusing lesson.
This year, big changes are coming to the testing center and the math lab!
The testing center, proctored by Social Studies teacher, Mr. Patrick Triplett, is making the long move to the B hallway. With all of the new construction that happened over the course of this past summer, Mr. Triplett’s classroom, previously located in the Science and Social Studies wing, moved next door to the math lab in room B111. These changes allow for the math lab, the testing center, and Jesuit’s educational technologist, Mrs. Michele Williams’ office to be next door to each other in the crossroads. Besides that, Mr. Triplett’s old classroom was reconverted in order to make room for the new Jesuit Stage and Film commons. In addition to the new location, the testing center is also open for more hours this year. The willingness of the ASC program has made it possible for the testing center to be open throughout the day, starting at 7:15 and closing at 4:45.
The math lab is also updating its schedule! It will be open throughout the day from 7:15 to 4:30. The rearrangement of teachers’ schedules combined with new math department faculty members made this much-wanted student resource a reality. The new school year also comes with new schedules for the faculty. If you are wondering when a specific teacher will be in the math lab, hard copies of the math lab faculty schedule are in the math commons, located upstairs in the A hallway. This information will soon be on Moodle. The math lab will also no longer be used for testing, as the emergence of the testing center has made it possible for the math lab to focus solely on tutoring and academic support.
As the new school year gets underway, it’s important to know what resources are accessible to students when they need help. If you have any questions about the math lab or the testing center, talk to your math teacher or Mr. Triplett.
