“Give blood. Often.” Maybe you’ve seen this slogan on the side of a large RV, or even on a park bench, but on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, Jesuit students and faculty will see this slogan all over the school as Jesuit hosts its community Carter BloodCare blood drive.
Some people may think their blood donation has a small effect in the world, but what they don’t know is that they are saving someone’s life.
From 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Carter BloodCare workers will be in the Terry Center collecting donations from anyone who would like to give. In order to donate, you must be 16 years-old with a signed parental consent form, and if you are 17 years-old or older, you may donate without a signed form.
If a student decides to donate, they will not only be rewarded with 3 service credits, but also with the joy that they are potentially saving someone’s life. The average adult has around 10-12 pints of blood in their body, so giving just one pint would mean more than the world to those in need.
In the past, the Jesuit blood drive has been one of the most successful community service events for students. Davis Bittner ’13, one of the students leading the drive, said that its past success is due to the fact that “[the drive] provides a quick way for all students to earn credit, and even if someone is under 16 years-old, their parents can also donate in their name.”
Bittner continued on to say the drive this Wednesday is anticipated to have over 100 donations, and the team’s goal is to surpass last fall’s count of 115 units of blood. He and his partner, Jacob Keeley ’13, “jumped at the chance to lead the drive because of its past success, and also because it’s for a great cause.”
