Ceramic Exhibit in the Information Commons

-

Jesuit has never had an exhibit like this before! There have been art exhibits in the past, but none of them have focused on ceramics quite like this one.

The Ceramics exhibit in the library brought a new sense of culture to the Jesuit community.

Featuring Mr. Ochs himself, Jesuit alumni, and students with a knack for art, the exhibit was put on by Mr. Ochs to show the students of Jesuit that many students and alumni can and do have a career in art, or consider art a serious hobby. There is not a particular category for the art. The main purpose is to show off the works of the Jesuit students and inspire them to continue their pursuit of the arts.

The idea of having an exhibition sprang to Mr. Ochs after talking to his old professor while on the way to an art conference. After talking to this professor, Mr. Ochs realized that he wanted to show off the work of the Jesuit community and expose students to the idea that ceramics can prove to be either a career or a hobby that can follow a person throughout the student’s life. Hopefully this exhibit will be able to lead to more student participation in Jesuit’s art community. The desired effect is that involvement in all the arts, not just ceramics, will increase.

This goal of students taking note of the art seems to have been achieved. Parker Capron ’15, a student at Jesuit and a student of Mr. Ochs stated that the art “is fantastic,” and Nick Swope ’15, another student of ceramics, described the art as “interesting” and “awesome.” Hopefully the exhibit will continue to inspire another showing next year.
