In their last regatta of the fall season, Jesuit Crew vowed to put their best foot forward as they took home gold in their race in Austin. As they prepared for this race, the crew team kept in mind the shortcomings of their performance the previous week in Boston and hoped to go into the winter off-season with a victory.
Facing opponents considerably less powerful than those they faced in Boston, Jesuit Crew was heavily favored and confident in their abilities as they hit the water at Lady Bird Lake.
When the races finished, Jesuit racked up 1st and 2nd place in the heavyweight varsity 8-man race, 1st and 2nd place in the heavyweight varsity 4-man race, and 1st and 3rd in the lightweight varsity 4-man race. Such a dominant performance restored any confidence that the Rangers lost at the previous regatta.
Although their opponents in Austin were nothing like their opponents in the northeast (the nation’s best region for crew), Jesuit’s success was not dismissible. Taking the top rank in all three varsity races, and taking the top two spots in two of the three races, Jesuit definitely looks to be a force to be reckoned with going into the spring. After such a performance, the crew team’s search for dominance within the state expands outward toward domination on a national scale.
“We achieved everything we were striving for in this last race,” explained Jorge Perez ´14, “and Coach Fife was pleased with our performance.”
This race gave them the opportunity to finish the fall season strong before entering into the offseason and then to the important championship regattas of the spring. Perez continued saying that “we did a good job of bouncing back, and now we know what we’re capable of.”
This impressive performance is sure to instill what Mitch McHugh ‘14 called “a belief in our dominance,” and the Rangers are sure to not settle for anything less than perfection.
These next few months are critical for the crew team if they hope to continue Jesuit’s winning tradition in the sport. December, in particular, is known as the month when great teams emerge and determine their future.
With much of the month of November and the entirety of December left to train, Jesuit Crew is sure to hit the weight room hard and improve their almost flawless team. It will definitely be exciting to see how the Rangers will come out to start the 2013 season and to see their hard work pay off.
