An event that takes places toward the end of the academic school year, convocation is designed to recognize students who have excelled in particular subjects, displayed a great passion for learning in a particular subject, demonstrated consistent service and leadership, or simply exemplified what it means to be a Jesuit student. The ceremony certainly recognizes students where recognition is due.
Shortly after the Freshman/Sophomore Convocation, I spoke with one of the Haggerty Math/Science Award winners, Preston Duff ’14. Above all, Duff was excited about the monetary award as he noted, “I don’t like my parents paying a ton of money [for school]. I try my best to obtain financial aid.” Duff was especially ecstatic after the convocation since the Haggerty Math/Science Scholarship was the award that he sought the most.
In addition, I had the opportunity to speak with Justin Rubenstein ’14, the recipient of the Principal’s Magis Award for English. Above all, Rubenstein noted, was the factor of surprise. “I feel that it is a good accomplishment.” Rubenstein also reflected on his back-to-back award by saying, “I am humbled that I got my award, but I do feel that someone else should have gotten it.” However, despite his feeling that other students were just as deserving, Rubenstein was still thrilled to be the recipient of the English Magis Award once again.
While there were a multitude of awards given at the event, certain scholarships and honors distinguish those students granted them from the rest of the crowd. The most significant of the honors are detailed below along with the name(s) of the student(s) who won that particular award.
Haggerty Math/Science Scholarships

One-year $1000 tuition scholarships are awarded to selected students entering the sophomore or junior class levels in the fall of 2012. Funding for the scholarships has been provided by the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas Foundation.
To be considered for the Haggerty Math/Science Scholarships, a freshman or sophomore must have either a 95 average in current math and science courses or an 85 average in current honors math and science courses. Each candidate is then reviewed by the faculty of both academic departments and the administrators of Jesuit to determine his achievements in mathematics and science. Also considered are his activities, leadership roles and community service involvement.

Principal’s Magis Awards

This award recognizes those freshmen and sophomores who love the pursuit of learning, students who may have impressed their teachers with the desire to grow and to learn. These students, while not necessarily achieving the highest grade in a subject, are students who seek the magis- the more- in the class.

The Counselors’ Scholarships

The Counselors’ Scholarships are funded by an anonymous benefactor. They are presented to students who have been active in the Jesuit community, are involved in scouting, church, YMCA, or other activity, are cooperative and are open to the Jesuit experience. The Counselors’ Scholarships, consisting of $500 tuition grants, are awarded to:

The Jesuit “Man for Others” Award

Jesuit’s “Man for Others” Award is given each year to students who exemplify, in their words and actions, what it means to be a Jesuit student. They have demonstrated in their dealings with others the ability to give of themselves selflessly. Each of these awards carries with it a $1000 scholarship furnished by the Jesuit Women’s Auxiliary.

The man who modifies the noun “problem” with the adjective “good” wields power. Its breath is neither the muse of Homer, nor Shakespeare, nor Thoreau. Its breath is certainly not from him or for him. Its breath is from God, and it is for the world, for the word is God.
