Anyone who frequents Jesuit sporting events has likely noticed a tall, serious young man crisscrossing the perimeter of playing fields with camera in hand. At dozens of Jesuit games, tournaments, and matches this year, junior Jack White has contributed his incredible photography skills. White can be spotted at most Jesuit Ranger games moving diligently up and down the field in search of the perfect snapshot. His photographs are featured in both Jesuit’s yearbook, The Last Roundup, and The Roundup student newspaper.
Thanks to a paid summer internship program at The Dallas Morning News, Jack White has a chance to expand his photojournalism skills and learn from the industry’s best and brightest this summer. Last week, he was named a finalist for one of the ultra-competitive internships at the Morning News.
As part of its high school journalism outreach program, The Dallas Morning News decided this year to offer internship opportunities to six outstanding young journalists. Two internships are offered in local news, and one spot is offered in each of the following areas: sports, guide/guidelive.com, photography, and digital reporting. Interns will work 32-hour weeks for 10 weeks this summer, earning minimum wage for their contributions.
High school newspaper moderators were notified in January that The News was accepting applications for the six intern spots. The application asked potential interns to write a brief autobiography and to include a resume, letters of recommendation, and a sampling of his or her work.
In February, White applied for the photography internship. Thanks to his impressive body of work, White learned last week that he had been named a finalist for the position. After a series of interviews, the interns will be named at The News’ High School Journalism Day on April 18.
White admitted to feeling excited and surprised when he got an email naming him a finalist for the photography intern position. “I honestly thought I had been passed up because so much time had passed,” said White. “Getting the email [naming me a finalist] in late March kind of surprised me.”
The young photographer hopes to cultivate his photojournalism interest in college and beyond. “I definitely want to pursue photo classes in college,” said White. “Whether or not I want to major in photography or follow that as a career, I really don’t know yet. It is definitely a passion of mine and something I love to do.”
