For the past two weeks the Pro-Life Club diligently tried to collect diapers during 1st period. To raise attention for the cause, they advertised all around the school via announcements and even a prayer service. Despite their hard work, the result was not as successful as it was in previous years.
“It wasn’t very good this year,” commented Eric Maras ’12, the student leader of the Pro-life Club. “Last year [we] had over fifty donations, but this year we had about ten. For next year, we will have to figure out how to get more people involved because it wasn’t that successful this year.”
“This disparity,” according to Eric, “was probably because [we] didn’t give out service credits this year, but we did last year.” Eric also attributed their shortcoming to the fact that, rather than being held in the fall like it had been previous years, it was conducted in the spring, which is a “busy time for students preparing for finals and other school subjects.”
Mr. Jude Harrington, theology teacher and moderator of the Pro-Life Club, believes that the diaper drive is about “help[ing] people” rather than wondering how many hours someone can earn. And, in the words of the Prayer for Generosity, it is “to give and not to count the cost.” However, the club is still looking in to the possibility of adding a service credit opportunity for next year.
Even without the substantial number of diaper donations this year, they still benefit some parents who chose not to have an abortion but rather to keep their baby. “Diapers are an excellent way to help these families,” says Mr. Harrington. “The diapers are a huge cost, [and] even the cloth diapers are expensive.”
Eric echoed Mr. Harrington’s views, stating, “Some people don’t have enough money to afford diapers. It’s a struggle for them. We are used to having enough money for diapers. This points back to ‘to give and not to count the cost.’ Even though you don’t get service hours, it is a good thing to help someone in need.”
To help make this drive a success next year, and to help parents and infants in need, please donate diapers to the Pro-Life club next year. It is a big deal to the families getting the diapers, and it is important to help families who do not have access to the necessities of life.
