Jesuit Swimming Swims to Victory

-

The Jesuit swim team out-swam McKinney Boyd last Tuesday, October 18, 2011, winning the meet 113-70. This meet was a “dual meet,” a meet where two schools face off solely against each other. The swim season lasts roughly from September until regional and state competitions in February, so this meet was one of the first few that the team has swum this year. Led by Coach BJ Antes and Assistant Coach Seth Waits, the swimmers have set high goals for themselves as well as their team. After interviewing Nick Wageman ’13, I was able to uncover more about the fascinating sport that so many lack knowledge of.

After coming close to winning regionals last year, the swim team hopes to win regionals and advance some swimmers to state this year. Aside from the team goals, Wageman, swimming backstroke and freestyle, also aspires to be successful in other aspects of the sport, commenting, “I want to make it to the second day of regionals, drop 4 seconds in my 100 yard freestyle, and do all I can do to make my teammates as well as myself better.”

In the most recent meet, Wageman did well in his two backstroke events, one being a relay. Other notable performances came from Eric Futscher ’13, Matthew Bedard ’14, Peter Steffek ’13, Garrett Toledo ’12, and Alex Knitch ’12. These five swimmers all improved their times in their events at McKinney Boyd. Futscher was more than satisfied with his performance last meet, stating, “I think I did a great job winning both my individual races in the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle.” Ultimately though, Futscher hopes to break a record set by Matt Thompson in the 500 freestyle by the end of the year. The results of the meet are as follows:
