After a disappointing loss to Coppell Junior Varsity in the Allen tournament on Thursday, January 27,2011, in dribble up penalty kicks, the Jesuit Junior Varsity won 5 games straight, playing the best soccer they have this season.
The Rangers scored the first goal, but were unable to fend off the Coppell team, letting in a goal in the beginning of the second half and ending regulation time as a draw. Because of the new UIL rules, if there is a draw then the game goes straight to dribble up penalty kicks. Five players from each team start with the ball 35 yards from the goal and have 5 seconds to dribble up and release the ball from their feet (the ball can still roll in after 5 seconds, though the player can not touch it). Coppell made 4 while Jesuit only made 2, advancing Coppell into the winner’s bracket and sending Jesuit to the loser’s bracket. Despite this unfortunate loss, Jesuit came back strong and beat McKinney 2-0. Then, for the final game of the tournament, Jesuit JV ended up playing Jesuit Freshman. Both Jesuit teams played hard and well, but the JV team was able to put away its opportunities, winning 2-0. After these two straight wins, Jesuit blew out Berkner 6-0, with goals coming from Sean Badger (’14), Brandon Ozier (’14), Juan Torres (’14), Colin Karlix ‘12), Cal Huntley (’12), and Chris Wengierski (’14). Then, to top it off, Jesuit beat Richardson 1-0 and beat Lake Highlands 3-0. Jesuit played phenomenal soccer the whole game, with all 3 goals coming from Sean Badger. After this streak of wins, the JV team currently has a 9-3 record. When asked his thoughts on the JV’s recent wins, Matt Mills, a sophomore right midfielder, replied, “We have been playing good, spreading the ball around, switching the field when it gets congested on one side.” But, Matt also stated, “Of course we have gained some momentum, but we can’t let it get to our head.” Coach David Williams addressed the recent wins saying, “I think we have a pretty good team. Overall we have a great group of kids who will get better as the season progresses. It is a group that seems to have a good time together on and off of the field.
