INTRO

With stunning cinematography, complex character development, and themes of moral ambiguity, Better Call Saul, the spin-off prequel to the popular TV show Breaking Bad, has been hailed as a masterpiece in its own right.

The show follows Jimmy McGill, masterfully played by Bob Odenkirk, as the show tracks his descent from struggling lawyer to criminal lawyer and con-man Saul Goodman, dealing with his own decaying morality and his consistently bad decisions.

The show doesn’t provide easy answers, but instead explores the gray areas of morality and the consequences of the choices we make.

WHY IT’S SO GOOD

The supporting cast is just as outstanding, with phenomenal performances from Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut and Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, and the relationships between the characters are some of the most compelling on television.

The dichotomy between Jimmy as a con artist lawyer only serves to heighten the blurred line of morality in the show. Jimmy constantly struggles to do what is right.

The narrative also acts as criticism and admonition in this way. The characters live in a world where doing things correctly is considerably more difficult and as a result of the court system’s capricious and unforgiving nature, this cynical attorney bends the law to his advantage.

Additionally, the show also follows the surreptitious world of the cartel. The series acknowledges the risks and consequences of the criminal underworld, one where mistakes are never allowed and feuds and family rivalries thrive among the bloodshed and murder.

This balance between two parallel stories, the cartel through Mike Ehrmantraut, Gus Fring, and Nacho Varga, and the lawyer stories, with Jimmy and Kim, create the perfect blend of an entertaining story that is constantly engaging and has you on the edge.

Matter of fact, the show was nominated for most outstanding drama annually at the Emmy Awards.

If that doesn’t convince you to watch this fantastic show, I don’t know what will.

Now that Better Call Saul is available on Netflix, it’s the perfect time to dive into this masterpiece of a show. While it’s not necessary to have watched Breaking Bad beforehand, it certainly enhances the experience. And one thing is for sure: once you’ve finished Better Call Saul, you’ll be eager to revisit the world of Breaking Bad.
