The MVP of the NFL season is given to the player who has been the most impressive and important to his NFL team. And while it’s tainted as a quarterback award, this year, there is speculation that it could award a wide receiver as the MVP. And while I think that should not be the case, it is still a battle that players have to face to win the award. Here is why Dak Prescott deserves the award, and not anybody else.

First of all, here are the three characteristics that I think decide an MVP.

1. Passing Yards and Touchdowns

2. Wins and Strength of Schedule

3. Supporting Cast and Coach

The first two are pretty self-explanatory. In order to be the most valuable player, you need good stats, and you need to win. If you are not winning, how valuable are you actually. And as for the last one, you could make Nathan Peterman (former Defensive Player of the Week), look like the next coming of Tom Brady if he could throw to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. And if your coach is in the way, and you are still putting up good numbers and winning, then you are extra valuable. Now, let’s take a look at three of the top MVP competitors and break down why Dak deserves the award more.

Brock Purdy

I can’t lie. Brock has been exactly what the 49ers need. He has won games against good teams and has played amazing… On paper. However, look at this graphic.

To explain, this graphic shows every throw each quarterback has thrown against an opponent. Dak versus Washington, and Brock versus Philadelphia. Now, look at how Brock Purdy doesn’t even attempt a pass farther than 20 yards. His passing touchdowns are not because of him. Anyone could dump it off to Deebo Samuel and let him do all the work.

And remember what happened in the first game Deebo, Trent Williams, and Christian McCaffrey got hurt? He lost and barely put up 17 points. Now, they lost because of their kicker so I’ll give him a break. How about the next game, Deebo was back, but because they had no run game (CMC was out), they still only put up 17 in another loss. Finally, his starting RT (Trent Williams) returned, and while the defense did give up 31 points to the Bengals, Brock, and the offense still put up only a measly 17 points in ANOTHER LOSS. How can Brock win league-wide MVP if he isn’t even the MVP on his OWN TEAM? Brock Purdy does not deserve MVP unless he throws the ball farther than 20 yards ONE TIME. Prove me wrong.

Jalen Hurts

Jalen’s passing stats are okay. He’s thrown for for 2,995 yards and 19 touchdowns to only 10 interceptions. He’s also ran for 12 touchdowns and 430 yards. First of all, I can confidently say that at least 7 of those rushing touchdowns are Tush Push plays (seriously, that play is so annoying). Second of all, Jalen Hurts has thrown a TD on 4.7% of his throws, and an interception on 2.4% of his attempts. Meanwhile, Dak has thrown a TD on 6.3% of his attempts, and an interception on 1.4%. Dak is performing better through the air.

Another thing that sets these two apart is stat-padding. Take each player’s game against the 49ers. Dak was down big and got taken out of the game with about 12 minutes left in the game. So tell me, with 2 minutes and 13 seconds left and you are down 33, are you risking your quarterback’s health to get his stats up? I’m not. But the Eagles did. Playing your quarterback in a game that’s already decided is just a risk that you shouldn’t take as a coach and as a player. The stats that Jalen Hurts got during the end of that game don’t make him more valuable as a player. Now I have nothing against Jalen Hurts, but he doesn’t deserve this MVP more than Dak.

Tyreek Hill

Now, in my opinion, MVP should be a quarterback award. I get the bias towards quarterbacks because quarterbacks overall are more important to a team than wide receivers. And while I could just say that and be over with. Here are some other reasons Tyreek doesn’t deserve the award. Just to be clear, I am completely aware that he is on pace to pass 2,000 yards this year. Okay, first of all, Tyreek hasn’t beaten anyone good. Neither has Dak (except maybe the Seahawks), but Dak has kept the Cowboys in contention against the Eagles. At the time of writing this, the Cowboys-Eagles game hasn’t happened so I don’t know the outcome of that.

Tyreek, against the Bill, Chiefs, and Eagles, has a total of 22 receptions for 208 yards and 1 touchdown. That’s okay, but not what I would envision to be an MVP wide receiver performance. I don’t have any idea what numbers an MVP wide receiver should have as there have been no wide receiver MVPs, but according to my guess, Tyreek is not hitting the numbers against good teams that he should. He is still great, but at the end of the day, MVP is a quarterback award, and there is nothing wrong with that. Overall, an elite quarterback is more valuable than an elite wide receiver. But congrats to Tyreek on his amazing year.

Now, we have some honorable mentions that I won’t go in-depth on, but are still contenders.

1. CJ Stroud

2. Tua Tagovailoa

3. Patrick Mahomes

These people still have a solid chance at winning MVP, but I am going to give my props to Dak Prescott. If you disagree with me, let me know during the school day, and I will listen to you (and by that I mean continue to explain why I am right). Dak looks great this year, but he is still a Cowboy, and it’s not unlikely for a Cowboy to fall off in an amazing year. Anyway, that’s it, and go Cowboys!
