Jesuit is known for providing a welcome and friendly environment for all who walk through the doors. Because of this welcoming environment, many alumni chose to return to campus and work in the Alumni Service Corps (ASC). Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Lee, one of our two new ASC members.
What was your experience like as a student here at Jesuit?
“I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s high school, it’s your formative years. You get experience by meeting and keeping up with relationships even after high school. You get to see who puts in the effort and through your own self whether you put in the effort to continue those friendships. Just coming back to high school brought back those memories of different feelings about different sports and just different things about everything. My time here as a student I enjoyed it because I got to participate in many different things when I was here and now, I get to see the flip side of it. For example, I participated in the JCL, Medical Society, and many other things. To see the students who are interested in it and who move on when I’m a faculty moderator and helping them is something new that I haven’t experienced.”
Where did you go to college and what major?
“After graduating from Jesuit in 2018, I attended Loyola University Chicago. Due to my interest in medicine such as the Medical Society, I majored biology and minored in finance.”
Has Jesuit changed from when you were a student?
“For the most part, the culture is about the same. It has become stricter in some areas. For example, the lanyards are something we never had to go through because fortunately we never had an incident like Uvalde to force us to take action like the lanyards. Some things are different, some things are the same as the culture and the way students interact with teachers is always the same. It is different in a sense that everything has more structure to it now and with that structure comes more leniency in some departments and more strictness in others hence the lanyards.”
Why did you decide to come back to Jesuit and join the ASC?
“A previous teacher of mine from here actually told me about the program several times and told me that I should apply for it my senior year. I decided that I was going to take a gap year before I applied to medical school and that I would have a year to spend however I wanted. So, I decided to come back to Jesuit and teach and interact with the community as a service mentor and guidance mentor the seniors and all the other classes as well but specifically the seniors to help them on their transition to college. I thought that would be a fun idea and as far as I’m concerned, it’s been great so far.”
What are your typical duties during the school year?
“During the school year, I can act as a teacher and in the case of an emergency I can act as a sub. I also act as a potential long-term sub. Other than that, I go on most of the retreats including Kairos for the senior’s community days and I go to each of the class retreats during the year. I also go on mission trips like the one in Waco in a couple of weeks and the one in Los Angeles. So, we basically act as a guidance counselor for the seniors, a faculty member for all the classes, a sub, and we also behave as a mission leader.”
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
“I am actually. Some of the clubs I joined are the math club, the entrepreneurship club, the investment club, the ultimate frisbee club, and the e-sports club. I also help students in the math lab. In addition, I’m trying to add to more and more clubs to become a moderator for each of those so I can outreach more into the community at Jesuit so I can touch base with more people.”
As the year commences, we are so excited to have Mr. Lee serve as our new ASC member. If you see Mr. Lee in the hallways or in the classrooms, please give him a warm welcome back to Jesuit.
