Yes, I already made an NBA article on this same topic. Don’t worry, NFL fans, I’m making one for you, too. This year’s NFL offseason sure as heck made up for one of the worst Super Bowls I, and everyone else, have ever watched (like, seriously, I lost track of how many times those two teams punted the ball away). Today, I’ll be covering everything from free agency in general to that one big bombshell that happened three weeks into the preseason…
Nick Foles Becomes The Man at the Top in Jacksonville
Mere hours after the official start of NFL free agency, reports came out saying that the Jaguars had inked Nick Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract. I don’t necessarily agree paying Foles that much dough is the right move for Jacksonville, but there’s no doubt that Foles is an upgrade over the interception machine that was Blake Bortles. Even though he hasn’t quite proven he can lead a team in the regular season (even though he did prove that he can lead his team to a title), I still think the Jags might be able to reclaim some of the magic they had in 2017.
Le’Veon Bell Finds a New Home with the Jets
With the whole Le’Veon Bell saga going down the way it did last season, everyone (and that’s not an exaggeration) expected him to say goodbye to Pittsburgh and sign somewhere else. And our theories proved to be correct, as Bell proceeded to sign a 4-year, $52 million deal with the New York Jets. For Bell, though, I think it’s still tough to determine how good he’ll be in 2019, as he hasn’t suited up for a whole year and we haven’t seen him play and don’t know how he’s changed. I guess time will tell for Le’Veon.
OBJ Packs His Bags for the Dawg Pound
Coming into this offseason, there were, I guess, some trade rumors floating around about New York Giants star wideout Odell Beckham Jr., but there wasn’t any real leverage at that particular point.
Y’know, yet.
Some time later, the Browns pulled the trigger and traded for the Giants’ star, who was coming off a great season but playing with a quarterback who is now at the nice young age of thirty-eight. OBJ now gets to pair with a younger, more dangerous-feeling field general in Baker Mayfield, and he gets to team up with good friend and college teammate Jarvis Landry in Cleveland as well. I’d say this is Odell’s best shot yet to compete for a Super Bowl.
And finally, the one I’m positive we’ve all been waiting for. Three weeks into the preseason, on the night I drafted my fantasy football team, the bombshell to end all bombshells detonated in our midst.
Andrew Luck Calls It a Career
On Saturday evening, I received a notification from Bleacher Report that illuminated my phone with a bright glow. The headline said:
Breaking: Andrew Luck Retiring
I was, for lack of a good enough term, flabbergasted and absolutely shocked. One of the best players at the quarterback position just hanging it up and walking away from the game? And, furthermore, at the age of 29? He was in the middle of his prime! Yes, I understand that injuries derailed his career, but he had just won Comeback Player of the Year last season! I hate how Luck was so good and showed so much promise, but then his body completely betrayed him. Anyway, I wish nothing but the best for Luck in his decision, but for the Colts? Jacoby Brissett is arguably the best backup quarterback out there, but really, that’s all he is: a second-stringer.
That’s all I’ve got for the Roundup, but be sure to stay tuned for more NFL and sports news!
