On Valentine’s Day weekend, Jesuit hosted its annual Mother Son Brunch at the Hotel Intercontinental’s Crystal Ballroom. The event allows students and their mothers to experience mass and share special bonding time together.
The morning began with a Mass celebrated by Father Huete, SJ, and included performances from members of the Jesuit Choir. Afterwards, Michael McReynolds ’15, Jimmy Ackels ’15, and Mr. Mark Knize all delivered speeches to describe their views on the importance of a son’s bond with his mother, especially in modern times when time together is at a premium. Mr. Knize explained that “our former President, Father Postell, SJ, started the event because he thought it would be really cool to have an event close to Valentine’s Day where moms could be close with their sons. It’s a very unique experience.” Additionally, Knize praised the student speakers for their courage, saying that their presentations are his “personal favorite part of the event, especially since the moms don’t know if their son is going to present. Also, it’s a really nerve-racking thing to do and it’s very impressive to see our guys getting up there every year and doing a great job.”
Students at the event echoed Knize’s appreciation for the event, as Thomas Horton ’16 described that “it was a great overall experience. It was a good way to spend time with my mom, who I know I sometimes take for granted.” The presentations advised the students to appreciate all that their mothers do for them and to make room for quality time with their maternal role models.
After the Mass and the speeches concluded, the sons gave their mothers flowers while their mothers returned the favor with candy. Then, they all shared a meal together and enjoyed each other’s company, taking advantage of photo opportunities to remember the event in the future. The responses to the brunch were overwhelmingly positive, as many look forward to next year’s experience.
