Over the past few months, Jesuit’s two varsity baseball teams competed in the fall season, each team playing six games. With six returning seniors that were on varsity last year, the team is very experienced. Coach Brian Jones explained that his goals for the fall season were to “stay healthy and get players as many innings in as possible.” After the short season, the two teams finished with a combined record of 10-2.
Pitcher Pete Hamrick ’16 shared his thoughts on the fall season, stating, “It was a very productive fall season. Everyone got a lot of reps with good competition. Injuries were a problem during the fall and we’re looking to come out strong in the spring.”
Although the fall season is only 6 games per team, Coach Jones believes it is very important because “it is a way to get our guys used to playing together again. Everyone goes their separate ways for summer ball, so it’s important to put Jesuit athletics first.”
University of Texas commit, pitcher, and outfielder, Kyle Muller ’16 said, “The fall was good. It gave us a chance to see the teammates we will be playing for in the spring and start building team chemistry. The spring season is going to be exciting, we will have a very solid team with pitching, defense and batting and I think we can make a good run in the playoffs.”
Now that the fall season over, the team is going to practice, practice, and practice. Coach Jones said, “We are now in off-season mode, meaning its weight room and boot camp until Christmas break.”
Practice will start back up after Christmas break, and the team will start scrimmaging other teams starting in February. Being a new district, the team doesn’t know what to expect from most of the teams they’ll play except for district rival W.T. White, who usually has a good team.
With a good fall season, and time to get faster, stronger, and better, the Jesuit Ranger Varsity Baseball team has a promising future for the upcoming spring season.
