Jesuit baseball is firing back up again with the season now under way. In order to be prepared for this season, many preparations and a lot of training have taken place. Although they are not a varsity team, the JV baseball team is no exception.
In the offseason, all players attended a boot camp all through December, along with lifting twice a week (an activity not unfamiliar to any athlete). In addition, baseball practice after school accompanied all of these activities until 6:00 PM every day. When asked what was helping the team the most during the offseason, JV Coach Pointer replied, “I definitely think our boot camp. It brings the guys together. It’s going to help us later on in the year when the guys are starting to get tired and endurance starts to kick in.” When asked later if he thought the guys were ready for the regular season, he continued, “I think they’re ready. I think they’re ready to start playing real games after doing all the practices and scrimmages. They’re ready to start beating up on some other people.”
Some of Pointer’s premonitions have come true after a district win against Skyline. The JV team also performed pretty well in two other tournaments. However, no team comes without flaws. Pitcher and 1st baseman Harrison Folk ’15 noticed that the JV team “just has to work out some kinks and we’ll have a pretty good season.” Harrison explained that one of the kinks is “executing. It’s doing what you are supposed to. It’s being flawless at the routine plays, being perfect at small ball, etc.” Clearly, this isn’t something overlooked by other players, for Lorenzo Riddle ’15 also said, “We are playing pretty inconsistently and our defense is lacking.” He says that because the season has just begun, the team still has much time left to bond together and work out any problems.
The JV team hopes to have a top-notch performance in the Jesuit tournament starting Thursday, March 7, 2013. With their continued hard work and dedication, the players will strive for victories. Good luck to all Jesuit baseball teams!
