The day has come. The JV and freshman basketball seasons have ended. Unfortunately, several games were canceled throughout the season due to COVID and the recent winter storm for both teams. Despite the setbacks, the Rangers’ teams performed valiantly and spectacularly in the face of this adversity. I’m here today to recap the last few games of the season for the teams. This will detail how I felt about the overall performance of all the teams throughout the season. That and this is kind of, like, my beat, so…

Let’s get into it!

JV Blue

Carson Whitworth ’23 gets ready to play some defense.

The JV blue guys experienced a shorter season than the JV gold guys due to a lot of game cancelations. As of now, the Jesuit athletics page has the team’s record at a very solid 9-6. The team gained a solid two wins out of their last three games. Despite their winning streak, a string of cancellations forced the team into a long and unexpected break.

The two wins came on January 15 vs McMillen HS and on January 19 at McKinney Boyd respectively. The dominating 57-29 win over McMillen came courtesy of some hot shooting, excellent team defense, and something of a home-court advantage. After a tough seven-point loss to Rockwall Heath at home, the team came back with a strong 57-39 win over McKinney Boyd. Jesuit dominated on McKinney Boyd’s home floor with the 18-point win.

Looking ahead to next year, the team is likely to inherit some solid talent from the freshman team. Many of the guys will likely move on up and join both the blue and gold teams. The Blue team is in good hands for the 2021-2022 season.

JV Gold

Sam Dunkerley ’22 looks to receive a pass.

Unfortunately, the JV gold team suffered three consecutive cancellations that ended their season without a chance to improve their record. However, they managed an overall 24-8 year, which is nothing to sneeze at. For the JV gold guys, the season ended with two consecutive wins over Cistercian and MacArthur respectively. These games, only one point apart in terms of score, were taken by the Rangers by scores of 55-38 and 56-38 respectively. And making these two wins even sweeter, they were both on the road.

Looking ahead to next year, many promising freshmen will likely leave the freshman teams and join the JV teams and the varsity teams. But again, the 24-8 record on the year is an extremely solid mark. Fortunately, the gold team did not have to go through so many cancellations as the blue team did. This is one of the major reasons why the gold team was able to do so well during their season. That and the amount of talent they had on their roster, too. I’ve heard that helps.

Freshman Blue

The freshman blue team completed an undefeated season, going 5-0 overall. Unfortunately, a string of postponements and cancellations, for obvious reasons, gave the team a lengthy break. However, the last two games of the season (again, according to the Jesuit Athletics website) came as solid home wins over Richardson HS and Lake Highlands, respectively.

The Richardson game was a rather easy 61-25 win, as home-court advantage played a big role in a massive Rangers win. In the LHHS game, the Wildcats crept back into the game in the second half, but Jesuit locked in in the last few minutes to put the game away and walk away with a nine-point 49-40 win.

Looking ahead to next year, I’m sure there are plenty of talented basketball players in that class. Hopefully they will take the reins for the freshman blue team, putting Jesuit in good hands for next season.

Freshman Gold

Freshman gold has had even fewer games than freshman blue. The team has a 2-2 average overall and their last game was played on February 2 and was a solid win over Nimitz on the road. The freshman gold team took that game in a 68-37 win, as the Rangers essentially controlled the game from the opening tip to the final buzzer and walked out of Nimitz HS with a dominant win.

Unfortunately, many of the games on the freshman gold team’s schedule have either been canceled due to COVID, or they aren’t on the Jesuit Athletics site. Looking ahead to next year, I don’t know a lot about the incoming freshman class, but there will be some talented players in that incoming class that will take over for the departing freshmen and the gold team will be in good hands for the 2021-22 season.

Well, that’s all for this piece, but stay tuned to The Roundup for more Jesuit basketball and sports news!
