Yes, I know, there has been a ton of Jesuit basketball for the JV and freshman teams over the break and yes, I know that this is likely the first you’re hearing of it from The Roundup. But, don’t let that steer you away, because today we’ll be recapping all the action from the past couple of weeks and look ahead to games for all the teams in the near future. So, that being said, let’s get into it!
JV Gold
Why am I starting with JV gold? Well, the true reason is that I just had their schedule pulled up first. Anyway, the JV gold team has been on a tear recently, as they are currently 14-3 on the year at the time of this one getting out there and are currently on a 3-game winning streak. After they smashed Rockwall on December 11, they took on Naaman Forest the next day (the next day!) and walloped them by a score of 64-35. Then, they kicked off the break by getting a truly gutsy win over a talented St. Mark’s squad by a score of 59-47, and home-court advantage was likely a massive factor in the Rangers being able to get that one into the win column. After the St. Mark’s win and a game against McKinney that was ultimately cancelled, they took down Richardson HS on the road with a twenty-point win (65-45 to be more exact on the score). They then took on Birdville and JJ Pearce with their next two games, those coming on Dec 29 and 30 respectively, and unfortunately during the Birdville game they took an 82-68 loss, as Birdville was red-hot from the field and it looked like the Rangers simply could not keep up. However, Jesuit responded with a solid 8-point win over JJ Pearce at home, by a score of 70-62. The JV gold guys then headed out to Lake Highlands HS to take on the Wildcats on their home floor on January 2 and came out with a nine-point 62-53 win. Then, jumping further down the timeline, on January 19, the Rangers’ JV gold team took on Richardson HS, again, but this time on their home floor at Walsh Gym. The Rangers again took a massive win, coming out on top 69-39 in a huge 30-point win that had “offensive explosion” written all over it.
JV Blue
JV Blue has not quite had the scorching-hot start the JV gold guys have had, but they have still posted a solid record of 7-4 on the year. On December 11, they took on Rockwall but fell to them by a score of 52-42. They attempted to rebound during the next game against Shepton on December 18 at Shepton’s home gym, but they couldn’t come out on top during that one either. It was a very good fight by the Rangers down until the very end when Shepton began to pull away, but Jesuit still only lost by a mere eight points, which isn’t something to sneeze at. For example, it might have been a different story had Jesuit lost by 15 or 20 points. The Rangers then went to Williams HS and nabbed a very solid 19-point win by a score of 59-40, as it could be argued that Jesuit had control of the game the entire way through. That win snapped a two-game skid for the JV Blue guys, which was an obvious sigh of relief for the team. After the Williams win, the team left for McKinney HS to take on, well, McKinney in an important road contest. After the McKinney game, they returned home to take on Clark HS and came away with a 33-31 win in what was a defensive battle for both teams. After the Clark game, the team took on McMillen at home and came away with a sound 57-29 win, as the buckets were dropping from all over the place and it could be argued that Jesuit had control of the game the entire way.
Freshman Gold
The freshman gold guys are a bit of a tricky case, as all but one of their games this season has been cancelled due to COVID. Their lone game was, fortunately, a win over Richardson, as the Rangers took a slim 6-point win on the road against a formidable Richardson team. The freshman gold guys can for sure hang their hats on this win, as it was very solid and perhaps magnified since it’s, y’know, been the only game of the season so far for the team according to the Jesuit athletics website. Looking ahead, tonight the team is scheduled to take on Nimitz here at Jesuit, although your guess is as good as mine as to whether that game will be played. When I know more or the website provides me with more scores and stats, they will find their way into this piece.
Freshman Blue
The stuff I said about freshman gold? Yeah, basically the same deal for freshman blue. Really the only difference here is that they have gotten off to a 2-0 start, with two absolutely dominating wins over Richardson and Lake Highlands, respectively. During the Richardson game, which was played at Richardson HS, the freshman blue team came away with a monster 60-20 win, as it could be argued that Jesuit had a firm grasp on the game the entire time and Richardson never had much of a chance. And really, it’s the same deal for the LHHS game, as Jesuit came away with another massive win, this time walking away with the 65-27 victory on the road. Looking ahead, they are scheduled to take on Nimitz tonight, just like the freshman gold team, here at Jesuit, but again, your guess is as good as mine when it comes to that game actually being played. If it finds its way onto the website before this piece gets published, it’ll come here as well.
Well, that’s all for this fantastically late piece, but stay tuned to The Roundup for more Jesuit sports news!
