Jesuit Swimming and Diving Shatters Records on Senior Night

Jesuit Swimming and Diving celebrated the Class of 2024 during a record setting regular season finale at the Gull on January 11th. The meet was a tri-meet between Jesuit, Frisco Wakeland and Frisco Heritage. The Rangers took down the Wolverines 126-54, while defeating the Coyotes 140-40. With this result, Jesuit finishes the regular season at 10-0.  This marks the Blue and Gold’s first undefeated season since the 2020-2021 season.

Highlights

200 Medley Relay- Jesuit’s “A” Relay would win the event, beating Wakeland by over three seconds. The team of freshmen Jonah Ruhl, senior William Savarese, and sophomores Luke Lary and Sam Kennington posted a time of 1:36.64, smashing their own pool record of 1:39.93. As it stands, they are a second off the current school record. The current school record is a 1:35.25 set in 2006 by Matt Thompson, Brooks Haller, Hamilton Jordan, and Andy Osterland. The “B” Relay (freshmen Drew Shippey, senior Teddy Scherer, junior Flynn Hughes, and senior Jaden Giunta) would finish fourth with a time of 1:44.61.

200 Freestyle- The Rangers went 1-2 in the event. Senior William Savarese took the win with a time of 1:37.94, while sophomore Sebastian Suwanda finished second with a time of 1:46.96. Savarese broke the previous school record of 1:38.11 set by Jesuit Hall of Fame member Matt Thompson. 

100 Butterfly- Jesuit once again showed its incredible depth at this event, taking each of the top-3 spots. Sophomore Luke Lary took the win, finishing with a time of 52.38. Flynn Hughes finished second, setting a time of 54.18. Rounding out Jesuit’s top 3 was freshman Drew Shippey, who finished with a time of 55.08.

100 Breastroke- William Savarese came close to breaking yet another school record in this event. He finished with a time of 56.44, coming less than a third of a second off the school record, 56.18 set in 2016 by Brendan Feehery. Savarese would in the event, with his teammates Teddy Scherer and Oliver Miller finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.

100 Backstroke- Freshman Jonah Ruhl once again broke the pool record in the 100 back. Originally a 54.55, Ruhl broke the mark by over a second with 53.42. 

400 Freestyle Relay- The previous pool record in this event was a 3:16.60 held by Frisco Wakeland. During that meet, Wakeland snapped Jesuit’s two-and-a-half year, 26-meet win streak. During the meet, Jesuit took back the record, smashing it with a time of 3:10.65. Freshman Jonah Ruhl led off the relay, splitting a 48.38. Following Ruhl were sophomores Sebastian Suwanda and Luke Lary. Suwanda split a 47.99 while Lary split 48.19. In his final regular season swim representing the Rangers, William Savarese recorded the relay’s fastest split with a time of 46.09.

Looking Ahead

The postseason begins for Jesuit with the District 7-6A Championships, set for the Gull on January 27. From there, qualifiers make their return to the Westside Aquatic Center for the Region 2-6A Championships. Prelims are set for February 9th while finals are set for February 10th. To conclude the season, the Rangers head to the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center at the University of Texas for the UIL 6A State Championships. Prelims is set for February 23rd, with finals taking place on February 24th.
