Jesuit’s profile of The Graduate at Graduation highlights six important traits that all students ought to espouse in their four years: a Jesuit grad should be open to growth, physically fit, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to social justice. Our school sets itself apart from both secular and other Catholic schools by placing a heavy emphasis on social justice, requiring frequent community service activities that serve the poor and needy.

One needs only to walk into the offices of Richard Perry or Anthony Mattacchione, the directors of community service, to realize just how seriously Jesuit takes their commitment to social justice. Both directors can rattle off a surprisingly long and diverse list of service sites that Jesuit supports.

Among these sites is the AIDS Services of Dallas, which provides housing and aid to community members suffering from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

This Saturday, Jesuit students will help put on the AIDS Services of Dallas’ No Tie Dinner and Dessert event, which benefits the charity. And yesterday, the “Good Morning, Texas” show on WFAA/Channel 8 covered the dinner event, singling out three Jesuit students for their support: Jacob Khoury ’12, Mark Diaz-Arrastia ’12, and Matthew Khoury ’14.

The “Good Morning, Texas” crew caught up with Stacy Susini, coordinator of the No Tie event, on their show yesterday. “AIDS Services of Dallas currently houses 225 men, women, and children living with HIV and AIDS,” Susini said. “But we also have 300 people on the waiting list. We need to raise some money.”

When discussing the pre-parties planned for the event, Susini challenged the place setting skills of GMT hosts Gary Cogill and Amy Vanderoef. The hosts invited the three-piece band of Diaz-Arrastia and the Khoury brothers to provide ambient jazz music while they raced to coordinate place settings. All three students will be volunteering at the event this weekend.

If any reader is interested in attending the event, it is not too late to sign up. The No Tie Dinner and Dessert event will be held this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. in the Frontiers of Flight Museum on Lemmon Avenue. For more information, see the event’s website here: http://www.notiedinner.org/
