Every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 AM, 43 Jesuit, Ursuline, Cistercian, and Greenhill students practice seven orchestral pieces until they reach perfection, or as close as they can to perfection. These orchestral pieces were the main attraction at the Fall Concert.
The pieces included Sinfonia in D, Adagietto, America-To Thee We Sing, Concerto in G Major, Serenade for Strings in G Minor, and Three movements from Lincolnshire Posey. The orchestra performed these pieces in front of their biggest crowd yet. In order to make the pieces sound as beautiful as possible, the concert was performed in Ursuline Academy’s Performing Arts Center. The director of this orchestra, Mr. Putnam believed that the musicians “did a fine job and sounded wonderful.”
While the orchestra only contains 43 members, it uses five different instruments! The instruments used in this concert included the violin, viola, cello, string bass, and piano. Each of these instruments were played in every song in order to encompass the full meaning of the piece.
While practicing and preparing for this paramount concert, some of the orchestra members were loading up their plates with musical practice. Six members of the orchestra were also part of the Jesuit/Ursuline Ranger Band. Not only did this mean performing and practicing twice as much as every other musician, but also it meant learning the different musical pieces and their roles in each bands.
If you are worried that you missed out on your only chance to see this amazing orchestra perform, worry no more because this was not there only performance of the year. The orchestra will have another performance on December 14 at 7:00 PM at Ursuline Academy. Mr. Putnam wants the orchestra, in preparation for this 2nd concert to learn “more music in time for the Christmas Concert.” He also intends for the orchestra to keep working on the basics and improve on the songs which they performed in the Fall Concert.
