Stepping onto the field over Spring Break, Jesuit’s Varsity Lacrosse team faced some of its most challenging games that it has experienced all season. Over the first weekend of Spring break, the lacrosse team traveled to North Carolina to play some of the nation’s fiercest competition. Although these teams were some of the best, the Rangers managed to battle through the weekend and have a very successful outing.

On Saturday March 3rd, Jesuit played Charlotte Latin, a previous state champion of North Carolina, dominating their opponent 16-4. On that Monday, they faced off against East Chapel Hill High School, again, standing victorious 13-4.

But the game of the week was the match against Gilman- now ranked 13th in the Nation. Jesuit came out fast, quickly gaining control with a strong lead of 6-1 towards the beginning of the match. However, the match turned around when the team received a 3 minute unreleasable stick penalty. After this point, Coach Surran believes that the team “ran out of gas”; they ended up losing 9-11. Nevertheless, junior lacrosse player Jason Myers’14 thought that the team “played a really good game and was really happy with how it turned out”. Surran believes that the team should have won the match, after obtaining such a great start. However, the match was still incredibly close. Surran believes that this close of a match made the “whole nation [take] notice that our guys can play with anyone.” Myers believes that if the team can play their best, “they are pretty much as good as any other team.”

After they got back from North Carolina, Coach Surran gave the team a Spring Break, which he usually doesn’t do, and stated that he felt slightly concerned about “not practicing for 5 straight days in the middle of the year but will see how it affects the team.”

Aside from the one match against Gilman, the Rangers have not lost a single game. They played St. Marks on the Wednesday March 20th when got back from spring break and once again won, winning 9-5. Then, that weekend the team went down to Houston and played Strake Jesuit and Houston Christian, dominating both of those games 12-1 and 8-4 respectively.

Looking ahead, the team still has some of its biggest matches, facing teams such as Highland Park and ESD, both of which are big rivals. Go Rangers!
