Torrey Pines (L 3-9)
Performing 2-1 against out-of-state teams in Miami at the Belen Jesuit Lacrosse Classic, the Rangers played California’s nationally ranked Torrey Pines Falcons on their own turf. The Falcons took an early lead with two goals off of a Jesuit turnover and a fast break, but senior Jacob Jackson dodged through multiple defenders to score Jesuit’s first goal. Torrey Pines scored three more goals to take a 5-2 lead at the half. Denied by the pipe 5 times, the Rangers were unable to take a lead over Torrey Pines although scoring two more goals from sophomore Sam Teachout and senior Peter Buell. The game ended as the Falcons stretched their lead with a goal in the third quarter and three more in the fourth to a final score of 9-3, Torrey Pines. Juniors Drew Martin and Jack Selner led the defensive stats with six ground balls from Martin and two forced turnovers from Selner. After the game the team enjoyed a dinner with the visitors and junior Carter Walters stated, “it was a great experience to eat with lacrosse players from California and learn what the sport is like outside of Texas.”
Southlake (W 11-7)
This THSLL West Division game would help determine Jesuit’s playoff chances, with the Southlake Carroll Dragons eager to end Jesuit’s in-state win streak. The Dragons struck first with a quick two goals until senior Zach Rilley scored an unassisted goal at the crease. Trailing two goals going into the second quarter, the Rangers tied the game 5-5 at the half with goals from Rilley and junior Tommy Hovivian. Jesuit took control in the third quarter as the midfield picked up six ground balls and senior Matthew Priddy scored a goal alongside Hovivian. In the fourth quarter, the defense held out as Southlake went one for six on shots and the Rangers ended the game with a score of 11-7. Rilley and Hovivian each had three goals, and junior Jack Selner and Priddy each had four turnovers. The Rangers exited the game with a division victory, entering into another division game with rival team ESD to decide their playoff spot.
ESD (W 8-7)
Due to incoming weather this anticipated match up was moved from April 14th to April 23rd, giving the Rangers more time to prepare for their rival opponent. On Tuesday the Rangers played ESD early to avoid weather closing in, but this game was stretched out over two days. The Eagles scored first with two goals but were stopped early in their streak by junior Billy Metz, scoring the first Ranger goal. However, the Eagles inched their lead ending the first 3-1. Jesuit then outscored the Eagles 6-2 in the second and third quarters. In the second quarter, sophomore Sam Teachout scored on a man up opportunity before assisting senior Jacob Jackson to tie the game. Senior Zach Rilley scored with 6:16 left in the second to give Jesuit the first lead, but the Eagles tied the game going into the half. ESD gained the lead in the opening of the second half but senior Peter Buell scored twice with assists from Teachout and Rilley. Senior Will Moran made a key save in the fourth quarter, but in the final 63 seconds, the Eagles tied up the game with two goals. In the first overtime, ESD attempted to win the game with an assist to the crease but it was stopped by Moran. After a Ranger turnover in man-up, the Eagles had the ball back but a lightning delay pushed the game back with under a minute left to play. Picking up after an intense game on Tuesday, the Rangers came back to Eagle Stadium to hold onto their undefeated record on Thursday. With no score in the first overtime, the Rangers entered the second overtime with possession as the Eagles were given a loose ball push penalty. With the ball in his stick, Teachout dodged and shot wide, but given a second shot, he ended the game with a final score of 8-7, Jesuit. With this victory the Rangers clinched the THSLL North West Division Title and a playoff spot.
Highland Park (L 7-9)
After defeating ESD in an overtime thriller, the Rangers faced off against Highland Park. The Rangers went down early in the first quarter but rallied in the second quarter. The score at half was Jesuit 3 Highland Park 5 with goals scored by Seniors Jacob Jackson and Peter Buell and Junior Tommy Hovivian. The Rangers bounced back in the third quarter with two goals from Senior Jacob Jackson, completing his hat-trick, and a goal from Senior Matthew Priddy. However, HP scored two goals of their own and the score was six to seven heading into the fourth quarter. Jesuit failed to bounce back in the fourth quarter with their only goal coming from Sophomore Sam Teachout. The final score was Jesuit 7 Highland Park 9. Senior Zach Riley commented “the game could have gone either way. We just didn’t finish our chances and they finished theirs.”
Frisco (Playoff) (W 11-5)
The Rangers faced off against Frisco for the first round of playoffs. They smashed through Frisco with a score of 11 to 5. Senior Jacob Jackson racked up another hat trick while Seniors Mattew Priddy, Zach Riley, and Peter Buell contributed to the scoreline. Sophomores Henry Suarez and Sam Teachout, Junior Billy Metz, and Fresham Mac Hobbs also racked up goals. Will Moran was dominant in the cage with 10 saves on the night and Henry Suarez won 13 out of the 16 faceoffs he took and also contributed 11 ground balls. Freshman Tyler Gazzam caused two turnovers. With a win the Rangers headed down to South Texas to play in the super regionals. Senior Sam Starr commented “we played really well in the first half. We ran our sets really well and we capitalized on them. But in the second half our energy was not there and that allowed them to score more goals.”
Memorial (Playoff) (W 8-1)
After defeating Frisco in the Regional Playoffs, the Rangers headed down to Houston to play in the Super Regionals against Memorial. Senior Will Moran owned the cage with 8 saves to his name. The Ranger defense was superb only allowing one goal throughout the entire game. Junior Billy Metz and Sophomore Curran Rose led the Jesuit Offense with two goals each. Junior Tommy Hovivian, Sophomore Sam Teachout, and Seniors Jacob Jackson and Peter Buell both add a goal each. Buell led the team with two assists and Hovivian caused three turnovers. Suarez was dominant again from the faceoff X, winning 7 out of the 13 faceoffs. The Rangers were victorious and beat Memorial 8 to 1 and clinched a stop in the Final Four for the State Finals. Senior Will Moran commented “the defense played their hearts out.”
ESD (Playoff Semi-Final) (L 4-5)
The Rangers and ESD clashed in the State Quarterfinals. Jesuit too a 2-1 lead in the first quarter with a goals from Junior Tommy Hovivian feed to Senior Jacob Jackson and an unassisted goal from Sophomore Henry Suarez after the faceoff. ESD bounced back in the second quarter with two unanswered goals. The score going into halftime was 3-2 in favor of ESD. ESD scored another goal late in the third quarter, bringing their lead to two. Hovivian grabbed another assist as he fed Sophomore Sam Teachout for a goal. Jesuit was one goal behind going into the fourth quarter. Senior Peter Buell tied the game up at 4 all but ESD scored another. With 10 seconds left the Rangers had a chance to tie the game up and go to overtime, but they came short and Teachout’s shot was saved by the ESD goalkeeper. ESD won the game 5-4. Senior Will Moran was dominate in the cage again with 14 saves to end his Jesuit Career.
Jacob Jackson will be playing Division 1 Lacrosse next year at Michigan and Will Moran will also be playing Division 1 Lacrosse at Lafayette. Peter Buell will join his older brothers at Rollins College and play Division 2 Lacrosse. Andrew Patton will also play Division 2 Lacrosse at Roanoke. Sam Starr will be attending the University of Texas along with Matthew Priddy and Ryan Kroll will be attending Louisiana State University. Zach Riley will be attending The Ohio State University next fall.
