On April 10-11, 2012, the Jesuit Varsity golf team will compete in the District 9-5A Tournament.

This year’s varsity team is incredibly diverse and fairly young as well. The team consists of just 4 seniors, 6 juniors, 3 sophomores, and a talented freshman in J. C. Campbell.

Josh Radcliff ’13 has performed tremendously this season, leading Jesuit to victory in multiple tournaments. Radcliff shared his personal goal each match in an interview: “I’m looking to go out and shoot even par or better for both rounds of the tournament.” If he can contribute another strong performance, Radcliff could very well lead Jesuit to yet another victory in the district tourney.

Sam Rosenberg ’14, a young, talented sophomore, will also be a huge factor in the upcoming district matchups. Confidently, Rosenberg gave his frank expectations for the district contest: “I expect us to win and hopefully take two teams [to the regional tournament in late April] as we did last year.”

Beyond just winning district, Rosenberg has higher aspirations for his team. “Our goal is to make it to state,” he said. “Although we still must play well, we are all confident at least one team will make it to regionals. And from there, we’re shifting our focus towards state. We didn’t have our best showing at regionals last year, but it’s definitely there. It’s all mental for the Jesuit golf team. Once we relax and play without doubt, state is at our fingertips.”

Jesuit Golf coach Cathy Marino hopes that both varsity teams will place at the top of the district tournament, and thus send two teams to regionals like last year. Because of the numerous underclassmen representing the varsity team, Marino stressed the importance of veteran leadership. “It is important for the upperclassmen to be leaders and good examples for the younger players,” she said in an interview.

According to Coach Marino, if all goes as planned, “good play at district will give us momentum going into regionals.  [We] hope to ride that momentum for a trip to the state tournament.” Golfer Jack White ’13 reinforced this sentiment: “The team wants to go to state.”

The team clearly believes in its ability to perform well at the district tournament. And if they do perform well enough to advance, this very diverse group of golfers could very well make a run for the state title.

Come watch the Jesuit varsity golf team during the district tournament on April 10-11 at the Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson and follow them as they hopefully make a run for the state title at the end of April.
