“The win at the Bart Granger is the biggest regular season win for the Jesuit golf team since I began coaching at Jesuit 18 years ago.” — Jesuit Golf Coach Cathy Marino

The Varsity Jesuit Golf Team got right to work last weekend, September 17th-18th, winning their first event of the season. Jesuit’s 1st place team finish in the 25th annual Bart Granger Memorial Tournament is a first in the program’s history. Coach Marino remarked that it has “the largest field (52 teams/250 players) of any varsity tournament in the state and has teams from all over the state in the field,” which makes it one of the toughest.

Bart Granger Memorial

The Bart Granger Memorial Tournament was started after the tragic death of former Paschal High School golfer Bart Granger. Granger and his friend Cameron Corbett were in a terrible car accident on October 10th, 1997, which took the life of Granger and caused serious injuries to Corbett. Ever since, Paschal High School has sponsored the tournament in honor of the late Granger, who had his life and golfing career stripped away from him at such an early age. Jesuit’s Valiant Performance

The team no doubt benefitted from a stellar performance by senior AJ Adams. He shot a team record 67, which placed him 5 under par in the first round followed by 71’s in the second two for a total of 209. This performance put Jesuit well on track for their victory as well as locked in a second-place finish for AJ as an individual. The performance also allowed him to be last week’s Jesuit Athlete of the Week.

“I’m very excited that we won the Bart for the first time in Jesuit history. The scary part about this year’s team is that I know that we can do better. Every single member of our team has a lot of potential, and I’m very glad that we were able to show it last week.” — AJ Adams

Also contributing to the win, Max Chan had a stellar round one shooting 69 followed by a 72 and 75 in the 2nd and 3rd rounds for a total of 216. Reese Roberts matched Chan’s total after strong performances in rounds 2 and 3. Nick Norris scored a total 223 and Jack Clancy scored a total 228. Combined, your Rangers had a day one total of 575 and day two total of 287 for the tournament’s best total score of 862.

“Our best finish prior to this was third in 2019 so this should give the team a lot of confidence moving forward. They played great golf as they had been doing in our practices leading up to the Bart Granger.” — Coach Marino

Jaguar Lake Park Classic

Later in the week, the JV golf team showed their abilities too, winning the Jaguar Lake Park Classic in their first high school tournament of the season. George Murray tied for first in the individual with a score of 76 followed by Jimmy Nackley’s 3rd place finish with a score of 77.

Conclusion

Coach Marino has a lot to look forward to after a strong start to the season with both her JV and Varisty teams taking home championship victories as she remarked “our future looks bright and we are excited about our upcoming tournaments.” While an undefeated season is unlikely, the future of this year’s Jesuit Golf Program is certainly promising!
