The Freshman/Sophomore Convocation is an event that occurs at the end of every school year. The convocation is intended to identify those students who have shined in particular subjects/extracurriculars, showed constant service and great leadership, or simply displayed the attributes of the Jesuit Student. The Convocation attempts to award the students who deserve recognition.
Shortly before the Freshman/Sophomore Convocation, I spoke with one of the past Haggerty Math/Science Award winners, senior Preston Duff. Above all, Duff was excited about the monetary award as he noted, “I don’t like my parents paying a ton of money [for school]. I try my best to obtain financial aid.” Duff was especially ecstatic after his Freshman/Sophomore convocation since the Haggerty Math/Science Scholarship was the award that he sought the most.
This year’s Convocation began with Mr. Garrison giving the Call to Worship, followed by Father Huete giving the opening prayer and Mr. Kirby reading from the Scripture. Mr. Host then presented the academic and extracurricular organization awards. After that, Mr.Garrison presented the other awards such as the Haggerty Math/Science, Magis, Counselors’, Man For Others, and Philip Postell, S.J. “Good Problem to Have” awards. Mr. Knize then gave a meditation on patience and trust, before the convocation ended with Mr.Earsing reading the closing prayer and dismissing the attendees.
The day after the freshman/sophomore convocation, I spoke with one of this year’s Haggerty Math/Science Award winners, Ryan Schaffller ’16. The Haggerty Math/Science Award signifies that one has excelled at Jesuit particularly in math and science. Ryan was “honored to be recognized by the math and science departments, and the award meant a lot to [him] because different fields in math and science have made personal impacts upon [his] life.” Ryan was especially excited to win this award because it was the one we wanted the win the most.
In addition to Ryan, I spoke with Tim Murphy, the counselor for the freshman class. According to Mr. Murphy, the awards are important to the winners because “it is just nice to be recognized for the work they put in all year.” He then later states that “it’s that time of the year where you put in countless hours of work in that subject area. It will also help motivate the students and have them strive for something.” Despite the convocations signifying the end of his time with the current freshmen, Mr. Murphy is excited to help next year’s class.
There were a multitude of awards given at the event; various scholarships and awards honored students who have stood out from the rest of their class in their classes, extracurriculars, community service involvement, etc. The awards are detailed below along with the name(s) of the student(s) who won that particular award.

Its breath is not the muse of Homer, nOR SHAKESPEARE, nOR Thoreau. Its breath is certainly not from him or for him. Its breath is from God, and it is for the world, for the Word is God.
