As we enter the fourth week of school, the Jesuit Cross Country team enters its fourth week of meets, and so far, they have been stellar. Coach Douglas Robinson, in his first year, is off to an impressive start, winning one meet already.

Week four was the best yet for the Rangers, with nearly every runner setting a personal record and competing with some of the best schools in the area, including St. Mark’s and ESD. Captain Dillon Smith ’14 improved his time by an amazing 30 seconds, and Captain Andrew Pott ’14 ran a solid 16:20 in the three-mile run. Captain Connor Garvey ’16 in his first meet back after recovering from tendonitis, ran a 16:28.

Week four was stellar for JV as well, with Connor ONeill ’17 posting an impressive 16:18 and winning the meet. This was a week to remember for freshmen Guss Baldwin and Miles Burrow, who lettered for the first time after running a 17:08.Week one was an impressive week for the Rangers, winning the meet lead by Smith, who finished in fourth place. Garvey, also had an impressive time finishing in ninth place. All varsity runners posted solid times, earning them the victory.

Week One was an impressive week for the Rangers, winning the whole meet lead by Smith, who finished in fourth place. Garvey also had an impressive time finishing in ninth place. All varsity runners posted solid times, earning them the victory. Seniors Smith and Pott along with Connor Garvey have stood out all summer and through the first week, setting personal records consistently while improving each week.

Pott is expecting big things out of his team. “[We] have done great so far and the competing has brought us closer as a team.” Pott went on to say that “Everyone is setting a personal record left and right, and I think we’ll do fantastic under [Coach Robinson].”

Week one was not just strong for varsity, the Junior Varsity team also won their meet. The biggest standout in this meet was Connor ONeill ’17, getting first overall in his first meet as a Ranger.

Coach Robinson was very impressed with the younger runners, stating that “[You] expect big things out of the leaders on the team, but there has been a lot of surprises on the lower level with guys like Connor ONeill ’17, Gus Baldwin ’17, and Ethan Brownlee ’17.” The Freshmen-Sophomore Junior Varsity squad has really stepped up and shown nothing but success so far.”

Although week two wasn’t as successful for varsity as week one, the runners put up strong times and improved from the prior weeks. The Rangers learned from week two and had a very solid week three. Even though they didn’t win week three, Dillon Smith ’14 stood-out with a very impressive 16:11, the best out of all the runners. Also, Zach Schutze ’15, showed a lot of promise, running a 17:43 in the three-mile run.

These past four weeks have really impressed Coach Robinson, exceeding his expectations. Coach Robinson explained that in the first four weeks he has been “pleasantly surprised.” Coach Robinson went on to say that “there is still a lot of work to do, but [the runners] have responded well to the competition, the workouts, and the change in leadership.”

Pott has high expectations for the rest of the season believing that “[we] can win district and send a least one runner to state. The JV, especially the freshmen, can dominate district.” The goal for the team, as stated by Coach Robinson, is to win district and to go on to the regional meet as well.

The team will be running in their fifth meet this weekend so be sure to follow their success.
