On March 1, twenty Jesuit Latin students traveled to Fort Worth Country Day School to compete at this year’s Area C JCL competition. Area C is considered the regional competition for JCL where schools across DFW come to compete. There are a variety of classical competitions students are able to participate in like written tests, art contests, ludi (sports), certamen (quiz bowl), and different speech competitions. The students where chaperoned by Latin teachers Mrs. Hudec and Ms. Jones.

Insights from Ms. Jones

Ms. Jones said, “The JCLer’s had a really great time visiting a new campus. They got to meet kids from other schools and they enjoyed being able to practice together. Students played quiz bowl and competed in sports. One of the best moments of the competition was seeing the joy on the faces of students when they found out that they won something. I would like to point out Levit Anderson who memorized a passage in Latin and Brady Zeck who build a model of an ancient Roman crane. They both ribboned in their categories and we are really excited to see how they perform at State. We are looking forward to going to state in Houston.”

Student Thoughts

Branch Dallman ’27 said, “I found the competition to be fun and relaxed, and the events afterwards to be just as fun, if not more fun. I specifically loved playing certamen with Luke, and the rest of the team, even though I didn’t know half of the answers, I still had a lot of fun.”

Luke Nettune said, “It was a super fun experience to get to meet other high schoolers in the Dallas area interested in the classics and compete in the different classical competitions”

Conclusion

Later this semester, a group of Latin students, who did well in the Area competition, will head to JCL state in Houston on April 4-5 and compete against students across the state. Stay tuned for more news about JCL on the Jesuit Roundup!
