On Tuesday, September 24, the Rangers cruised past Bishop Lynch with a 149-11 victory, with first-place finishes in every event.
This was the largest margin of victory the team has had against their traditional season-opener opponent.
The 2023-24 Season of Jesuit Swimming and Diving was one of dominance, with many records being broken and a 10th District title being added to the Gull’s trophy case.
Throughout the past month and since the beginning of the 2024-25 School Year, the swimmers have been working hard and getting back into shape since the offseason. For the first two weeks of the season, the team trained in their annual “Bootcamp,” hosted by the coaches and senior captains. There was a great amount of conditioning on the land, with exercises that swimmers call “drylands.”

Notable Races
200 Medley Relay
Kicking off the meet, Jesuit’s A-Relay of Drew Shippey ’27 on backstroke (back), Grant Wilton ’27 on breaststroke (breast), Luke Lary ’26 on butterfly (fly), and Jackson Addison-Jordan ’26 on freestyle (free) would win this event with a time of 1:45.73. All swimmers had very promising 50-yard splits on each of their legs, especially Addison-Jordan, with a 50 free split of 22.77, dominating over his previous personal best (PB) of 23.96. The C-Relay (George Weaver ’26, Javi Ruiz ’28, Jihaad Houston ’26, Peter Hasik ’27) would finish second with a time of 1:54.86.
200 Free
An event dominated by sophomores, the Rangers would claim the 1st-4th places out of five. Jonah Ruhl ’27 placed first with a time of 1:47.76, JP McCosker ’27 placed second with a time of 1:59.59 (a PB for him, which is very impressive this early in the season), then rounding out the Rangers were Michael Tobin ’27 with a time of 2:01.17, and Peter Hasik with a time of 2:06.09.
200 Individual Medley (IM)
This event served as another strong 1st-4th finish for the Rangers out of five swimmers. Sebastian Suwanda ’26 picked up the win with a time of 2:05.27. Rounding out the Rangers were Drew Shippey (2:10.23), Javi Ruiz (2:13.30), and George Weaver (2:24.93), placing second, third, and fourth, respectively.
50 Free
Out of 27 swimmers, 25 were Rangers, the first seven spots in this event belonging to Jesuit swimmers. Luke Lary won the event with a time of 22.65, then in second with a PB was Jackson Addison-Jordan with a time of 23.29, and in third was Jihaad Houston with a 24.46 time. The next few spots were highly contested at 25 seconds between Rangers Porter Pope ’28, Tyler Ezetendu ’28, Charlie Plummer ’28, and Sam Carley ’25. In many of the other 50 free spots were freshmen, who being new to the team, performed very well and with some more training and work, may be powerful forces in the future.

500 Free
This event featured only four swimmers, all of whom being Rangers picking up major points. Sebastian Suwanda won this event with a time of 5:03.42, then came Grant Wilton (5:11.00), JP McCosker (5:19.06), and Javi Ruiz (5:27.20). All four swimmers are sure to have a strong career in distance this season, with more notable swims to come.
200 Free Relay
This event would serve as a major team-bonding experience for the swimmers, especially for some of those who are new to Jesuit. Out of all of the relays, three were made up of primarily freshmen, who were not only competing to give their relay the best time, but also to get to know and race with their peers. Despite a timing malfunction that may show results online as different with two wrong 50 splits, the leading relay would be the A-Relay of Luke Lary, Jackson Addison-Jordan, Sebastian Suwanda, and Jonah Ruhl with an unofficial time of 1:31.28. In second was the B-Relay (Shippey, Tobin, Michael Hasenfratz ’25, Houston) and rounding out the top three was the C-Relay (Wilton, Pope, Michael Sanmiguel ’27, McCosker). All of the competing Rangers in this event swam phenomenally.
