At the end of every Junior year, there comes a highly anticipated ceremony; The Junior Convocation. The Jesuit community gathers together as a whole to celebrate the achievements of outstanding Juniors who challenged themselves inside and out of the classroom. The ceremony also recognizes the transition between Junior year and Senior year, a transition into leadership.

The annual Junior Convocation was held in the Terry Center on May 19th, at 2:30. The ceremony recognized Jesuit Juniors who excelled in their respective classes, extracurriculars, and dedication to community service. Jesuit awarded numerous scholarships, book awards, and other prestigious awards to rising Seniors.

Alejandro Rey Hipolito ’16 believes that “[Convocation is] a great time to celebrate the accomplishments of all your peers. It acknowledges the extraordinary efforts of individuals and really lets them know that their hard work is appreciated and rewarded.” After winning honors in five categories of awards, Hipolito says that “I was truly flattered for all the recognition I got and from all the support I received from fellow classmates, especially ones I do not interact with on a daily basis. I felt that the intense hard work I had put into infamous Junior Year had finally paid off. It definitely encourages me to work just as hard in my senior year as well.”

Pryor Miller ’16, who was awarded the Pedro Arrupe Award, commented that the day “was a very special moment for my friends, family, and I. It will be something that I will never forget.” He added that “I think that if I were to have one goal it would be to just keep on being the man I want to become this time next year. Truly living out what we as Jesuit students are called to do, be men for and with others.”

Having won the McWhorter Scholarship, Macbeth Diaz ’16 said that “I never would have thought of ever getting that award and I was actually very surprised when they called my name to get the award. It’s a great honor obtaining this scholarship and it’s something that I will never forget in my life.”

While many awards are staples of the ceremony, one new award was added this year, already carrying immense honor and prestige; the Father T.J. Martinez Award. Honoring the late Father T.J. Martinez S.J., the award honors a Junior who exemplifies the passion for Community Service Fr. Martinez championed. The award, granted to Gordon Webb ’16, was a “huge honor,” according to Webb. Commenting on the fact that he was the inaugural recipient, Webb said that “being the first recipient is definitely a big deal but most of all I think that once something great gets started like this, give it time, and then it’ll be something even greater in a few years. I hope the people who are next in line to receive this award understand how special it is and I am, once again, honored to have started the ball rolling.” He went on to say that “I am a person who always wants to improve myself and I know there’s always more to do and more to improve. This award has given me motivation to be the best I can be even when things get tough and it also motivates me to keep reaching.”

Finally, the Henrion Scholarship, a scholarship that grants tuition for one senior, was granted to Brice Donovan ’16. Donovan said that “Winning the Henrion Scholarship is weight-lifting. It really feels like the burden on my mom and I has been vanquished because she gets to save more money and I get to have more free time in order to study, get ready for college, volunteer more, and sleep!” Donovan summed the experience up by saying “overall, it feels really great to have received this Scholarship and I thank God for this blessing to me and my mom!”

While only a few rising Seniors were honored with awards, the Junior convocation recognized the Junior class as a whole by showcasing the many talents and diverse skills possessed by the Juniors as a whole. As the members of the Class of 2016 begin their transition into senior year, they will hopefully be committed to giving their talents in order to enrich the Jesuit community.
