Jesuit Swimming and Diving defended its undefeated season at the UIL District 7-6A Championships at the Alfred J. Loos Aquatic Center on January 27th. The Rangers scored 170 points to win the meet. They were followed by JJ Pearce (128), Highland Park (125), Richardson (44), Lake Highlands (40), Berkner (18), Nimitz (6), and MacArthur (4). Jesuit set 3 District records and will send a total of 19 entries to the regional meet on February 9-10. Jesuit senior William Savarese took home the District Swimmer of the Meet Award, with head coach Doug Moyse taking home Boys Coach of the Meet.

District Champions

200 Medley Relay

Women: Highland Park (Angelina Huang, Maxine McAllister, Lydia Westcott, Bella Dewhirst)

Men: Jesuit Dallas (Jonah Ruhl, William Savarese, Luke Lary, Sam Kennington) • DISTRICT RECORD

Starting the meet off strong, the Rangers took the win in the event. Jonah Ruhl led the relay off with a 25.60 50 backstroke split. He was followed by senior William Savarese, who split 26.21 on his 50 breastroke, and sophomore Luke Lary, who split a 23.48 on his 50 fly split. Sophomore Sam Kennington closed out the relay, splitting a 21.76 50 freestyle.

200 Freestyle

Women: Abagail Reimer, Richardson

Men: Jonah Ruhl, Jesuit Dallas

The Rangers went 1-2 in this event. Freshmen Jonah Ruhl, fresh off the 200 Medley Relay, went a 1:46.40. He was followed by sophomore Sebastian Suwanda, who finished with a 1:46.66. Both swimmers were seconds within their best times. Rounding out Jesuit’s top-3 was senior Liam Weaver. Weaver, in his final race for the Blue & Gold, dropped over six seconds from his seed time.

200 Individual Medley

Women: Angelina Huang, Highland Park

Men: William Savarese, Jesuit Dallas • DISTRICT RECORD

Savarese continued his record-breaking season. Finishing with a time of 1:51.25, he broke his own district record, a mark of 1:52.94 which he set last year. Additionally, he would be over nine seconds ahead of the next fastest finisher.

50 Freestyle

Women: Lydia Westcott, Highland Park 

Men: Michael Higgens, JJ Pearce • DISTRICT RECORD

In this event, a pair of Jesuit sophomores would take second and third, punching their ticket to the region meet. Luke Lary finished second with a time 22.33. He out touched his teammate Sam Kennington, who touched the wall at a time of 22.43.

100 Fly

Women: Mia Springborn, JJ Pearce

Men: Michael Higgens, JJ Pearce

Despite the quick turnaround, Lary secured another entry at the region meet. Finishing behind Pearce’s Michael Higgens (51.21), he touched the wall at a time of 52.53. Junior Flynn Hughes also qualified, taking the fourth slot with a time of 53.75.

100 Free

Women: Danielle Greenwood, JJ Pearce

Men: Jonah Ruhl, Jesuit Dallas

Jonah Ruhl obtained his third win of the meet, securing first with a time of 48.08. Jesuit added two more regional qualifiers in this event, Sam Kennington (50.71) and Jackson Addison-Jordan (51.03). Originally seeded 12th, Addison-Jordan shaved over two seconds from his best time to leap the competition and take 6th, securing a regional qualification.

500 Freestyle

Women: Grace Belknap, JJ Pearce

Men: William Savarese, Jesuit Dallas

Savarese took first in this event, finishing with a time of 4:30.70. His teammate Sebastian Suwanda took second, finishing with a time of 4:50.77. JP Mcosker rounded out the Rangers’ top-3, finishing sixth with a time of 5:14.74.

200 Free Relay

Women: Highland Park (Lydia Westcott, Angelina Huang, Bella Dewhirst, Corrine Banta)

Men: Jesuit Dallas (Teddy Scherer, Flynn Hughes, Sebastian Suwanda, Sam Kennington)

Jesuit came within two seconds of setting a District record in this event. Senior Teddy Scherer led off the relay, splitting a time of 22.53. Junior Flynn Hughes followed him, getting himself a split of 23.05. Hughes handed it off to Sebastian Suwanda, who split a 22.26. Suwanda then gave way to fellow sophomore Sam Kennington. Kennington split a 22.25, holding off a late comeback by Pearce’s Michael Higgens.

100 Backstroke

Women: Angelina Huang, Highland Park • DISTRICT RECORD

Men: Nathan Chan, Highland Park

Jesuit’s top finisher, Flynn Hughes, took second in this event with a time of 56.76.  Following Hughes was fellow junior Michael Hasenfratz, who finished with a time of 1:00.28. Jake Follet rounded out Jesuit’s top-3, finishing with a time of 1:01.73.

100 Breastroke

Women: Highland Park, Lydia Westcott

Men: Ruihan Zhu, Highland Park • DISTRICT RECORD

Jesuit got two regional qualifer from this event. Senior Teddy Scherer finished third with a time of 1:01.51. The Rangers’ other qualifier, junior Oliver Miller, was seeded ninth going into the meet. However, he shaved two-and-a-half seconds off this time, going a 1:04.54 to secure fifth place.

400 Freestyle Relay

Women: JJ Pearce (Isabel Chien, Grace Belknap, Hattie Scott, Danielle Greenwood)

Men: Jesuit Dallas (Jonah Ruhl, Sebastian Suwanda, Luke Lary, William Savarese) • DISTRICT RECORD

This relay was all Jesuit start to finish. Freshman Jonah Ruhl led off the Rangers with a split of 47.73, and the Rangers never looked back. Ruhl handed it off to sophomore Sebastian Suwanda, who split a 48.26. Luke Lary was the Rangers’ third leg, splitting a 48.47. Senior William Savarese anchored Jesuit’s 400 Free Relay, splitting a time of 45.91.

The Rangers have just two meets left in the season. Up next, it’s the UIL Region 2-6A Championships at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville, Texas. Preliminaries is set for February 9th at 3:30pm. Finals will take place the next day, February 10th at 4:30pm. From there, qualifiers will advance to the UIL 6A State Championships. Those are set for February 23rd-24th at the University of Texas’s Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center.

Sebastian has been working for the Roundup since the beginning of his freshmen year. Within Jesuit, he is involved with the Admissions Ambassadors, Campus Ministry, and Religious Rangers. He also serves as the Outreach Coordinator for Rangers for Life and the Student Chaplain for Jesuit Swimming and Diving. Outside of Jesuit, he is involved at church and does club swimming at Dallas Mustangs Swim Team. His two favorite Netflix shows are Suits and Designated Survivor.
