quest for school spirit at Jesuit has been filled with starts and starts, lurches and lulls.\u00a0 The first pep rally was held in November 1946.\u00a0 The climax of the rally \u201coccurred when the flag was raised on an imitation Iwo Jima to denote the Rangers\u2019 coming victory over Adamson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1948 <em>The Roundup<\/em> urged the student body to have more spirit:\u00a0 \u201cThe season of [C]okes and crackerjacks, of colorful bands and pep squads, of pep and snap . . . we are printing your FIGHT SONG and some of your school YELLS.\u00a0 Learn them and use them, fellows!\u201d\u00a0 Several articles throughout the 1940s and 1950s implore the students to have more spirit.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-904 gallery-columns-3 LaBac\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>In 1949 Jesuit had its own mascot dog, Ranger, \u201cgiven to the Jesuit Fathers as a Christmas present in 1942.\u201d\u00a0 Per <em>The Roundup <\/em>November 1952 Ranger died but was replaced in March 1954 by Ranger II who died one month later (<em>The Roundup<\/em> April 1954).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the mid-1960s ushered in a more consistent and organized display of school spirit.\u00a0 The Black Derbies spirit club formed in the fall of 1966.\u00a0 Each homeroom elected two representatives, both of whom were to attend all home athletic events.\u00a0 The next year this group was reorganized by Ray Bulger \u201967 and cheerleader Lucian LaBarba \u201968 and became the Lone Rangers.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery Patch\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Ray Bulger \u201967 was named \u201cRanger of the Month\u201d in May 1967. \u201cRay\u2019s concern for school spirit was clearly shown in his organizing and establishing the Lone Rangers (a new club set up to help promote school spirit both on and off the field) and his overall efforts caused the senior class to vote him the most school spirited\u201d (<em>The Roundup <\/em>May 1967).<\/p>\n<p>In December of 1970 Bill Franz \u201971 received the \u201cRanger of the Month\u201d award for his involvement in the Lone Rangers and putting \u201cothers over his own personal gain\u201d (<em>The Roundup <\/em>Dec.1970).\u00a0 The group gained a new moderator in 1972-3, Mr. Leo Watermeier.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, participation declined until, in 1973, the group dropped the homeroom elections and decided to open enrollment.\u00a0 By 1976 the group was noted as the \u201cMost enthusiastic and well organized group in the school\u201d due in large part to the leadership of Mike Ostdick \u201977, President, and Tom Houle \u201977, Vice President (<em>The Roundup <\/em>Nov. 1976).<\/p>\n<p>This 1976 group revamped its constitution and Fr. Pat Koch rewarded the group with its own budget.\u00a0 This year also brought such a large influx of participation that its membership was limited to 30 members. \u00a0Twenty were freshmen.\u00a0 As in the previous five years, the group continued to sponsor Ranger Day with a wiener roast.\u00a0 A rival spirit group, The High Rollers, tried to \u201cduplicate the techniques of the original spirit group\u201d but failed.<\/p>\n<p>The 1976-77 Jesuit Bulletin listed the Lone Rangers as a club for the first time.\u00a0 The September 1977 <em>Roundup <\/em>states that \u201csince last year\u201d the Lone Rangers went coed, with Ursuline, for the first time.\u00a0 As one of \u201cthe most active clubs in school\u201d and a group that begins work before the school year starts, the group was allowed to wear their white spirit shirts without ties on Fridays.<\/p>\n<p>The group wore black cowboy hats until the early 1970s when they adopted the white dress shirt with \u201cLone Rangers\u201d embroidered on the back. The \u201977 year\u2019s officers were President Vince Laino \u201978 and Vice President Eddie Thomas \u201978.<\/p>\n<p>According to pictures in a 1970s-80s Lone Rangers scrapbook, the group had a horse at one point.\u00a0 However, this was not Jesuit\u2019s first horse.\u00a0 The October 1965<em> Roundup<\/em> notes: \u00a0Late in August of last summer, Jesuit acquired a 185 pound horse, Otis, as Jesuit\u2019s first official mascot.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-3' class='gallery galleryid-904 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon Pin\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Mr. Jeff Sandoz, S.J. \u00a0and Miss Diana Mason became the moderators in 1981-2 with Bob Granger \u201982 as president.\u00a0 In an effort to boost spirit Sandoz established the annual Silver Bullet Award.\u00a0 He also established three honors plaques:\u00a0 The Silver Bullet, The Golden Spur, and the Spirit Award.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 the administration condemned the bullet as an inappropriate, violent symbol.\u00a0 It was replaced with a new belt buckle under the leadership of moderator David Williams.\u00a0 Interestingly, the oft seen Yosemite Sam type symbol used throughout the school was also softened to erase his guns.<\/p>\n<p>The Lone Rangers continued to make spirit signs for athletics and announcement signs for clubs.\u00a0 A Lone Ranger section was established in the stadium stands and the group hosted a \u201cWestern Week\u201d for homecoming.\u00a0 \u00a0Later, the group moved to standing in the walkway in front of the stands.\u00a0 Kip Assenheimer \u201984 became president in 1982-3.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Roundup<\/em> October 1989 notes several details about the 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Lone Rangers.\u00a0 At some point the group had parted with Ursuline, but October 4, 1989, marked the official day of a new coed partnership.\u00a0 Although only the boys would meet on Monday nights, the group hoped to make the organization into \u201cmore of a \u2018Social Club\u2019\u201d and be as strong as \u201cthe days with Scott Barretto \u201987.\u00a0 The group added new Student Council representation with Steve Richardson \u201992.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-4' class='gallery galleryid-904 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-4-979'>\n\t\t\t\tLone Rangers 2006 \n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>A rival group again reared its head\u2014MOBB or Men Opposed to Boring Ball games.\u00a0 When the group failed to gain administrative approval, it decided to join with the Lone Rangers.\u00a0 Now the Lone Rangers had three sections:\u00a0 Jesuit Lone Rangers, MOBB, and Ursuline Lone Rangers.<\/p>\n<p>Again, <em>The Roundup<\/em>December 1991 notes, the group attempts to become coed.\u00a0 John Lund \u201992 is listed as the Senior Leadership.\u00a0 And again in 1992-93, another spirit group forms:\u00a0 JFS, the Jesuit Fighting Seniors.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the Lone Rangers prevail and continue as one of the oldest clubs at Jesuit under the leadership of President Brand Greene \u201994.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Seth Waits \u201901 recalls that through 1997-99 the Lone Rangers continued to remain active, painting art for the breezeway and rallying student spirit during football games.\u00a0 However, by 2000-01 they were not sure if they were an art club, or a spirit club, or both.\u00a0 In 2002 Mr. Mike Earsing put David Williams, a 1996 graduate and current faculty member, in charge of the group to revitalize it as a spirit club.<\/p>\n<p>Williams tapped Andrew Hansen \u201903 to lead the rebirth of Lone Rangers.\u00a0 Hansen began a new tradition&#8211;grilling before games\u2014to pump up the group\u2019s spirit and the Lone Rangers finally started to rebuild.\u00a0 In 2004 the Lone Rangers spent its entire budget on flags to run on the field like other high schools.\u00a0 The Bronco flag was given to the group for free after the company that made the \u201crun through\u201d \u2013 the signage that the football players run through as they enter the field \u2013 messed up the order.\u00a0 One homecoming the \u201cE\u201d flag was lost and replaced by a slightly different one.<\/p>\n<p>The Jesuit seniors decided to replace the dress shirts with new white Polos.\u00a0 Their request to have the shirts proclaim \u201cYell like hell\u201d was denied by Principal Mike Earsing.\u00a0 Instead the phrase was translated into Latin :\u00a0 Clamate Sicut Inferni ,Yell like the dwellers of Hades.
