{"id":2276,"date":"2017-07-20T13:16:17","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T18:16:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/?p=2276"},"modified":"2022-08-22T17:47:38","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T22:47:38","slug":"history-of-the-roundup-and-the-last-roundup-1950s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/2276\/history-of-the-roundup-and-the-last-roundup-1950s","title":{"rendered":"History of The Roundup and The Last Roundup 1950s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In October 1949 the paper reported that it had been accepted into the Catholic School Press Association \u201cwith a rating of First Honors, the second highest classification for High School newspapers.\u00a0 The rating was based on all of last year\u2019s monthly publications, and a separate award, Second Honors, was given to <em>The Last Roundup.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In March 1950 <em>The Roundup<\/em> sponsored two writing contests.\u00a0 The first was an essay over the topic:\u00a0 The Catholic Answer to Communism.\u00a0 The students could research the topic to ready themselves for the contest but bring no source work with them to the library after school when the event was held.\u00a0 The winners would be recognized at graduation.\u00a0 The second contest was to write an original short story.\u00a0 The winner received $5.00 and had his story published in <em>The Last Roundup.\u00a0 <\/em>The banquet was held at Italian Village on May 4.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2293\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1950-the-last-roundup\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2293\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1950-The-Last-Roundup-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Roundup 1950 First Distinguished Service Awards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1952 &#8211; 1953 <em>The Roundup <\/em>was almost shut down for lack of funds.\u00a0 The Ministers Diary of September 1952 notes the decision that \u201cIn view of the Bishop\u2019s attitude concerning interference of the selling of advertising in High School Papers with His Diocesan newspaper advertising, the printing of the Roundup will be discontinued, and a Ditto Edition of several pages will appear at intervals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, a group of mothers held a series of Bingo parties to raise funds.\u00a0 The short story contest continued.\u00a0 The requirements were:\u00a0 \u201cThe story must be original and its length must be five hundred to fifteen hundred words.\u00a0 Stories that are typewritten must be double spaced on regular typewriting paper, and handwritten copies must be done neatly in ink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper had two moderators this year, Mr. C. E. Johnson, S. J. and Mr. J. L. Vessels, S. J., one to deal with the financial problems and one to oversee the production.\u00a0 They announced an English essay contest over the life of St. Francis Xavier, What Does It Profit?\u00a0 46 boys entered.<\/p>\n<p>The Province Prefect report in 1954 noted that the paper \u201cis financed by sponsors, since advertising in school papers is not countenanced in Dallas.\u00a0 The article are well written and have the spontaneity and freshness of the student-writers who produce them.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2292\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1950-advertisement-last-roundup\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2292\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1950-Advertisement-Last-Roundup-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Roundup 1950 Advertisement Page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 1955 yearbook, under the direction of Mr. Earl Johnson, S. J., became the first hardcover yearbook.\u00a0 The Province Prefect report noted:\u00a0 \u201cThis year for the first time the school will produce a yearbook, instead of the \u2018Final Roundup.\u2019 It is understood that the yearbook can be produced as cheaply as the booklet that the school formerly published.\u00a0 The difference is in that the yearbook will be done by offset process, whereas in the booklet it was necessary to use cuts and regular printing.\u00a0 The plan is good.\u00a0 But as the school grows larger there be a tendency to let the yearbook become an expensive operation.\u00a0 I think that this should be guarded against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1956 &#8211; 1957 the staff was split into two groups, one for <em>The Roundup <\/em>and one for <em>The Last Roundup.\u00a0 <\/em>The March 8, 1957, <em>Roundup <\/em>reported extensively about the paper\u2019s history and behind the scenes work.\u00a0 Under the direction of Mr. Richard W. McGowan, S. J., the newspaper returned \u201cto newsprint in eight pages.\u00a0 This change enables <em>The Roundup<\/em> both to give a more current coverage of the news and to publish more pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the news coverage, McGowan would often claim in a stern and forbidding voice: \u201cThis is absolutely the last paper I\u2019m going to put out.\u00a0 If those editors want to put out another one, it\u2019s up to them . . . don\u2019t expect me to do all the work again.\u201d\u00a0 However, as time passed between editions McGowan regained his good humor and helped.<\/p>\n<p>At this time <em>The Roundup<\/em> sent copies to many places across the city, state, country, and world. \u201cIn Dallas the Roundup [sic] is sent to most of the public high schools, to all the pastors and parish schools, to the Texas Catholic, the Chancelory, and the Public Library.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2309\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/roundup-1953-dth-1st-place-trophhy\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2309\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Roundup-1953-DTH-1st-place-trophhy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dallas Times Herald 1st place award<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It went to all Texas schools, both Catholic and non-Catholic, with which the school played football.\u00a0 It was mailed to all the Jesuit High Schools, to many Jesuit houses, and to priests who had served at Jesuit Dallas.\u00a0 In addition, it was mailed to Jesuits overseas, from Belgium, Ceylon, Cuba, Rome and Spain.\u00a0 Special \u201ccouriers\u201d brought the paper to the local girls schools.<\/p>\n<p>The 1957 <em>Last Roundup<\/em>, under the direction of Mr. R. Miller S. J. and Tracy Johnson as editor-in-chief, debuted a padded cover which would remain for some time.\u00a0 It sold for $4.00 with a $2.00 deposit.\u00a0 As the March 8, 1957 edition explains,\u00a0 \u201cThe sponsor drive this year is limited to Roundup and Las Roundup members.\u00a0 This drive will pay for the Roundup during the year . . . which is currently being distributed free, and will also help pay expenses on the Last Roundup.\u00a0 Each member\u2019s quota is $100.00.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 1957 banquet was held at Donlen\u2019s restaurant on Sunday, April 21.\u00a0 The staff was noted not only for the more frequent coverage but also for distributing the paper free since it was supported by profits from the yearbook.\u00a0 One speaker, graduate Mr. Burns and a former staff member noted that reporting and writing would help the students throughout their lives.\u00a0 \u201cHe said the ability of a person to express himself and his ideas would always . . . mark him as a learned man\u201d (<em>The Roundup<\/em> May 1957).<\/p>\n<p>All this work demanded workers, and the editor issued a passionate plea for more staff:\u00a0 \u201cFive hundred students, all taking English four years, and thirty-five put out the school paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sources:\u00a0 The Principal\u2019s and Minister\u2019s Diaries, The Province Prefect Annual Report 1953, The Mothers\u2019s Club Scrapbooks, and the student school newspaper, <em>The Roundup)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; In October 1949 the paper reported that it had been accepted into the Catholic School Press Association \u201cwith a rating of First Honors, the second highest classification for High School newspapers.\u00a0 The rating was based on all of last year\u2019s monthly publications, and a separate award, Second Honors, was given to The Last Roundup.\u201d [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":2299,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[114],"class_list":["post-2276","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-history-of","tag-1950s"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
