You may wish to visit the history of the Philothespic Society to grasp the full picture of this busy and important activity.<\/p>\n<p>1940s<\/p>\n<p>The Debate Team originally began as part of the Philothespic Society. [Philothespic is Latin for love of theater.]<\/p>\n<p>The October 1940 Roundup states that the purpose of the Philothespic Society \u201cis fostering devotion to the art of public speaking and dramatics in accordance with its motto, \u2018Serve God in Joy\u2019. . . . Another purpose of the Phil is to teach its members the fundamentals of parliamentary law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the 1943 &#8211; 1944 school year, the Society decided to begin a debating program in order to train students \u201cin mastering the art of public speaking and presentation.\u201d The opening debate on March 30 took place at 8:00 p.m. They considered the topic \u201cGermany Should Be De-Nationalized After the War.\u201d Bill Triece and Jack Stanton won the negative. <a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1627\/the-history-of-debate-1940s\/the-prize-debate-1949-1950\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1634\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1634\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Prize Debate 1949-1950\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950-768x1046.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950-752x1024.jpg 752w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950-696x948.jpg 696w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950-1068x1455.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950-308x420.jpg 308w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Prize-Debate-1949-1950.jpg 1503w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second and third debates considered whether the U. S. should take possession of Japanese islands in the Pacific after the war. In the first, Jack Burney and Jack Nabholtz won for the affirmative. The affirmative again won in the third debate, argued by Fred Cook and Stanley Redmond.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth debate argued: \u201cAmerica should ask Russia now of her post-war plans.\u201d Charlie Tresp and Matt Sweeney won the negative argument. The fifth debate asked, \u201cShould Negroes sit with white in busses and movies, eat in the same restaurants, and go to the same schools in Dallas?\u201d Jim Scanlan and Mickey Borsch won for the affirmative.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Lake and Charles Settle won the final debate, \u201cMovies are a greater influence for evil than for good,\u201d by arguing to affirm the good.<\/p>\n<p>The first Prize Debate was presented on February 9th, 1945, at 8:00 p.m., debating the topic Resolved: That the legal voting age be reduced to 18 years.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1627\/the-history-of-debate-1940s\/june-1947-debate-team\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1633\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1633\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-1947-Debate-Team-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"June 1947 Debate Team\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe 1946 issue was Resolved: That every able-bodied male citizen of the Unites States should have one year full time military training before the age 24.<\/p>\n<p>The Roundup June 1947 reported that at the end of the 1945 &#8211; 1946 school year the Society\u2019s beloved moderator Mr. Weber, left. His departure left the Society weakened. Membership dropped to thirteen. However, the new moderator Mr. Shaughnessy, proved more than capable, and under his leadership, the membership increased by the end of the first semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prize debate [was revived] under the direction of the capable and hardworking Mr. Cronin,\u201d Mr. Shaughnessy\u2019s assistant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1630\" style=\"width: 202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1627\/the-history-of-debate-1940s\/1947-1948-prize-debate\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1630\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1630\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1947-1948-Prize-Debate-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Program cover from The Prize Debate of December 12, 1947\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Program cover from The Prize Debate of December 12, 1947<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The January 1947 Roundup reported that a new organization had been formed in the first of the year, The Jesuit Speech Sponsors. This organization, comprised primarily of parents of participants, funded travel to speech tournaments. They intend to increase the number of participants, from ten or fifteen to twenty-five.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament on February 15 &#8211; 17 at Northwestern State held eight speaking events such as debate, poetry, and original oratory.<\/p>\n<p>The June 1947 Roundup reported that Jesuit hosted its first intra-class debate tournament. The tournament was formed after a challenge by St. John\u2019s High School of Shreveport, LA. After practicing against two local schools, the team set off for Shreveport. \u201cThe rest of the story is just as you would expect, sight-seeing tours, food, \u2018bull sessions\u2019 with the St. John\u2019s boys on the differences in and evasions of their rules as compared with ours, for St. John\u2019s is a Jesuit school too, more food, which, incidentally, was supplied very generously and on a large scale by Maynard Cush, whose father owns a grocery store.\u201d Jesuit Dallas won the argument.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1627\/the-history-of-debate-1940s\/1947-1948-prize-debate-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1631\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1631\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1947-1948-Prize-Debate-2-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"1947-1948 Prize Debate (2)\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe May 1948 Roundup noted the Phil\u2019s busy year: \u201cBesides the debates, radio plays, Shakespearian scenes and the various speaking contests [during weekly meetings] there were the many and varied public performances.\u201d In December the Society \u201cput on a special radio adaption of King Lear over Radio Station WFAA. Later over the same station they broadcast the Easter Pageant \u2018I Covered the Resurrection.\u2019 This was followed by a special King Lear broadcast over Station KLIF.\u201d They also enacted one-act plays for the Mother\u2019s Club, the Ursuline carnival and the Holy Name Society.<\/p>\n<p>Through the years the Society continued its presentation of Shakespearean dramas, shorter skits, as well as Prize Debates. However, its primary purpose was to train \u201cthe students of Jesuit High School to think, to speak, and to act, so that they may be better prepared t graduate from Jesuit and become real leaders in the world\u2014Catholic men who will serve the world in the best way they know how\u201d (January 1949 Roundup).<\/p>\n<p>The 1948 &#8211; 1949 Last Roundup notes that membership applications \u201ctopped any previous year in the Phil\u2019s history.\u201d Sunday meetings helped prepare the debaters for their many contests. Ray Prasifka defeated speakers from seven other schools to win the \u201cI Speak for Democracy\u201d contest.<\/p>\n<p>In December 1948 the Society partnered with the band to raise money for a Christmas shower for the faculty. The event, sponsored by The Mother\u2019s Club, raised $365.<\/p>\n<p>On April 21, 1949, five finalists in the Elocution Contest vied for the top spot. The contest attracted the largest number of participants to date, so many, in fact that double eliminations were necessary. The Merici High School choral club entertained as part of the program.<\/p>\n<p>The October 1949 Roundup states that the purpose of the Philothespic Society \u201cis fostering devotion to the art of public speaking and dramatics in accordance with its motto, Servite Deo in Laetitia\u2014 Serve God in Joy. . . Another purpose of the Phil is to teach its members the fundamentals of parliamentary law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Last Roundup reports that on December 14, 1948, Jesuit sponsored the most hotly contested Gold Medal Debate in history. The subject was Resolved: That the United Nations now be revised into a Federal World Government. The Negative Team, Al Collins and Neil O\u2019Brien, won the debate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1512\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1512\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1627\/the-history-of-debate-1940s\/1940s-debate-trophy\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1512\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1512\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1940s-debate-trophy-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"1940s Debate Trophy\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1940s Debate Trophy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the judges, John H. Malone, James S. Alderman, and James H. McCaffrey, determined the winner, Edo Biasatti entertained the audience with \u201cMia Carlotta\u201d and \u201cDa Horsa Race\u201d The best speaker went to Johnny Stacer of the Affirmative. Fr. Kammer coached the Affirmative and Fr. McCowan coached the Negative. Fr.
