The Nov. 1943 <em>Roundup<\/em> notes that Jimmy Scanlon and Jack Burney performed a magic show.\u00a0 In addition, &#8221; A jitterbug contest was held . . . [and the winners] obtained a prize of a season pass to our football games.\u00a0 Before, between, and after the contests, shows and entertainments and refreshments were provided.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Valentine dance on February 12, 1943, was sponsored by the Sodality club in the high school hall.\u00a0 Couples tickets cost 30 cents, \u201cstag\u201d tickets cost 40 cents [event ticket].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1367\/dances-1940s-through-1950s\/1943-valentine-dance\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1368\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1368 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1943-Valentine-Dance-300x125.jpg\" alt=\"1943 Valentine Dance\" width=\"300\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1943-Valentine-Dance-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1943-Valentine-Dance-768x320.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1943-Valentine-Dance.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1943-Valentine-Dance-696x290.jpg 696w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1943-Valentine-Dance-1007x420.jpg 1007w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1943 Valentine Dance<\/p>\n<p>Jesuit\u2019s first junior\/senior prom was held on May 19, 1944, at the Lakewood Country Club.\u00a0 The seniors \u201cdecided that there would most assuredly be a prom, if Father Mulhern would consent,\u201d and he did (<em>The Roundup <\/em>May 1944).<\/p>\n<p>The February 1944 <em>Roundup <\/em>notes that one difficulty the girls had to overlook at a dance held on November 19, 1944, was \u201cthat some of the boys wouldn\u2019t dance.\u00a0 The students of Jesuit are slowly but surely getting over their bashfulness.\u201d\u00a0 The jitterbugging was enjoyed by all.<\/p>\n<p>A victory dance after the October 13 game against Laneri cost 25 cents per couple, 50 cents stag.\u00a0 \u201cMusic was furnished by that ever-loving jukebox, beatin\u2019 out the boogie, and singing out the swing\u201d [sic] (<em>The Roundup<\/em> November 1944).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were blue streamers and streaming gowns and stiff fronts and a good smooth orchestra that evening of the second annual Junior-Senior Prom . . . at the Dallas Country Club\u201d (<em>The Roundup <\/em>May 1945).\u00a0 Unfortunately, no date is included in the account.<\/p>\n<p>By 1945 dances sometimes became fundraisers.\u00a0 The November 1945 <em>Roundup <\/em>describes a dance whose proceeds \u201cform the largest contribution to the fund responsible for the maintenance of the Senior Lounge.\u201d\u00a0 In October 1946 the class of Three A sponsored a Halloween party (<em>The Roundup <\/em>Spring 1947).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-value=\"[null,2,&quot;\\u201cThe esteemed sophomores of Jesuit High contrived and executed a successful and very illustrious dance in the Jesuit Auditorium. Doug Deffari again demonstrated, with the assistance of Betty Domino, the essence of Jitterbugging ability to the tune of a sizzling recording. Of the dance as a whole, nothing but good can be said and we might add that the sophomores are to be commended for their generous donation of part of the proceeds of the dance to the seniors to assist in the building of their lounge.\u201d [The Roundup]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first supper dance was sponsored at Jesuit by Class 3A in January 1947.\u00a0 \u201cThe auditorium was given a night club-like appearance by indirect lighting, and a dual floorshow, consisting of a magician and two musicians\u201d (<em>The Roundup<\/em> May 1947).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1367\/dances-1940s-through-1950s\/dance-program-front-cover\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1374\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1374\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Dance-Program-Front-Cover-300x293.jpg\" alt=\"Prom 1948 Dance Program \" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Dance-Program-Front-Cover-300x293.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Dance-Program-Front-Cover-768x751.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Dance-Program-Front-Cover.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Dance-Program-Front-Cover-696x680.jpg 696w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Dance-Program-Front-Cover-430x420.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prom 1948 Dance Program<\/p>\n<p><em>The Roundup <\/em>December 1948 first notes a homecoming dance after the Laneri game on November 12.\u00a0 The students from Laneri and three girls\u2019 schools were invited.<\/p>\n<p>During the 1940s, Class 3A sponsored the most dances.\u00a0 Their November 24, 1948, dance included a contest to decide \u201cwho would be first to succeed in getting the milk out of his bottle.\u00a0 The contestants were Mark Tolle, Dick Whetzle, graduate Dave Healy, and Coach Shorty Wall.\u00a0 Although intended to be a contest of brawn rather than brain, Mr. Wall outsmarted the others by pulling the nipple off his bottle and finishing first\u201d (<em>The Roundup<\/em> December 1948).<\/p>\n<p><strong>1950s<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-303\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/1950s-anecdotes\/square-dance-club-3\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-303\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-303\" src=\"https:\/\/archives.jesuitroundup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/square-dance-club2-300x156.jpg\" alt=\"1953-1954 Square Dance Club\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/square-dance-club2-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/square-dance-club2-768x399.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/square-dance-club2-696x362.jpg 696w, https:\/\/jesuitroundup.org\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/square-dance-club2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1953-1954 Square Dance Club<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>On November 1, 1952, the homecoming dance began with a Grand March when \u201call attention was focused on the queens, who stepped, as it were, from within a large football.\u201d\u00a0 The maids of honor crowned them with wreaths.\u00a0 The dance ended about 1:00 a.m.\u00a0 (<em>The Roundup <\/em>December 1952).<\/p>\n<p>In February 1954 the Jesuit band held its annual dance. \u00a0The featured entertainers were the six Kool Katz (54 Mother&#8217;s Club Scrapbook)<\/p>\n<p>The 1954 Prom was held at the Dallas Country Club with Buddy Mack\u2019s band.\u00a0 The 1956 Homecoming dance was held in the gym which had been turned into a \u201cbeautiful \u2018Skyline Room\u2019\u201d by the queens and the football team.\u00a0 The \u201cTones,\u201d Jesuit\u2019s dance band under the direction of Bill Schuster, provided the music.<\/p>\n<p>In November of 1958, \u201cAs everyone struggled up to the gym Saturday night, they were pleased by the decorations which were hung in a colonial manner.\u00a0 They consisted of yellow, blue, and white strips of paper clever-strung from time-worn rafters to improvised wooden stages. . . .
