I will try to remember \u201cthe good old days\u201d at Jesuit.\u00a0 I am afraid that my reputation was not as shining as most of my colleagues. I will try to keep my memoirs as \u201cprintable\u201d as I can.<\/p>\n
The first thing I must tell you is that in the first year Jesuit started the parents of most of the boys thought that Jesuit could straighten their sons out.\u00a0 So Jesuit had an enrollment of many \u201cbad boys\u201d.\u00a0 I am afraid that I fell in this category.<\/p>\n
We had \u201cPenance Hall\u201d which is my first memory.\u00a0 Case in point\u2026One afternoon I had Penance hall and the good Father had written a long division on the board consisting of about 20 numbers divided by about 30 numbers.\u00a0 I asked the Father why we were not doing something useful.\u00a0 He said, \u201cHerndon, that\u2019s a very good idea.\u201d\u00a0 He asked us to follow him.\u00a0 We all thought nothing could be worse than working the long division.\u00a0 I was a Hero for about 10 minutes until we reached the tool shed.\u00a0 We each got a lawn mower; not a power mower but a push type.\u00a0 We were instructed to cut the school grounds.\u00a0 I was no longer a hero.<\/p>\n
The student body had to wear ties.\u00a0 We did but we wore the same ties all year long.\u00a0 We used then for handkerchiefs, to clean our pens, and anything else we could think of.<\/p>\n
Another fond memory.\u00a0 There was a Brother by the name of Mr. Burgan, a great guy.\u00a0 He had a reputation for throwing an eraser or chalk 50 feet and hitting you up the side of your head.\u00a0 He never missed.<\/p>\n
We had a great football team. \u00a0We could never find anyone to play.\u00a0 We were not in a conference, so we would play anyone.\u00a0 Our coach was Mr. Maher.\u00a0 A great guy.\u00a0 His father owned the Ford dealership.\u00a0\u00a0 I tell my children that I played football in the Cotton Bowl, which is true as Jesuit had no other place to play.<\/p>\n
I left Jesuit my senior year and joined the Navy.\u00a0 I flunked math and Father Mulhern could not see it in his heart to give me a diploma, but I still love Jesuit and I have lots of fond memories of the old days.<\/p>\n
I thank you for this brief stroll down memory lane.<\/p>\n
