Photo of an old fisherman boat's on a rooftop in the town of Thera (Fira), Greece. Credit: Troch, from Lomography.

We again have another photo using a piece of vintage camera equipment. I found this photo when my dad told me he had an old camera in the garage. The camera was an old Nikon FM2. In my curiosity, I looked up photo’s taken by this camera, and that is where I found this beautiful photo.

The photo was taken by the photographer troch (on Lomography). The pictures were taken on Nikon FM2 , using a 35mm lens, with Konica Centuria 200 film. The image itself was shot in the small town of Thira (Fira), Greece. From the information in the photo description, it seems like it was taken during a holiday vacation sometime in 2003. The photo itself was uploaded on 2011-01-31.

The location of the photo is popular in Thera, Greece for photos. Hundreds of pictures of the same boat on the same roof are found in Thera, Greece. It has become a tourist attraction for many aspiring photographers looking to capture a unique location. The origins of why the boat is on the roof are not entirely known, but if you ask me, it was just placed there by a local who did not need it.

What I Love About It

While you could find hundreds of photos from stock image sites with the boat on the roof, none of them advocate the same emotion as this photo. First off, unlike the other polished and clean images of the boat, this one is full of imperfections and white marks. It gives it a sense of being from the moment before me, but one that was too far ago. It was captured from a moment, there forever and without any change or aging. It gives off the feeling that it is just you and this boat in this strange world.

The angles the photographer chose helped build that one-on-one feeling. Unlike other photos showing other buildings around it, this photo has virtually no other buildings. Also, the background is just mountains and ocean-going on forever, disappearing into the fog far off. This help builds that feeling that it is in another world, open that we have not seen, empty of any human touch. It’s just nature. The background feels like the world you have in a dream, just very otherworldly.

The rooftop also feeds into the feeling of isolation. You have an old rusty boat that has been used for many years and is in decay. This old antiquity is put on a pure white roof without blemishes and imperfections. This creates a stunning contrast between the beauty of the old place on a white canvas to display its beauty without distraction perfectly.

Final Thoughts

I hope you enjoy the beauty of this photo as much as I do. I recommend looking at more of troch (photographer of photo) work and photos. There is beauty in vintage images, which modern-day cameras can not capture. If you want to keep learning about photos, follow this series for more unique and beautiful photos.
